The Nazification of Germany and the Gleichschaltung meant that all aspects of people lives were impacted by the Nazi regime. Culture and religion were controlled by the Nazis, as was employment. Young people and women were forced to adapt to Nazi ideals. Significantly, minorities, especially the Jews were affected by Nazi policies.
Over the next few lessons you are going to create a mind map that depicts the 'Impact of Nazi's on life in Germany' This can be hand written or done on a your computer.
At the bottom of each topic, there will be a question. That question will form the basis of your point for your mind map. Your responses should be in point form and provide a clear overview of that section.
Homework-
Mini essay (approx. 600 words - 15 marks)
Referring to at least 2 sources between Source 31-41 and your own knowledge, evaluate the impact of the Nazi regime on life in Germany, including cultural expression, religion, workers, youth and women.
The impact of the Nazi regime on life in Germany, including cultural expression, religion, workers, youth, women, minorities including Jews
As for the Rise of the Nazi’s dot point this one could easily be explored for 10-15 marks so you will need depth in your notes.
Succinctly explore each of the listed groups and discuss what factors influenced their daily experiences under the Nazi regime:
Recognise that some groups lives were improved under the Nazis e.g. Workers who fit Volsgemeinschaft
Whilst others were clearly negatively impacted such as minorities and Jews. On a side note my suggestion is to prepare one paragraph for Jews and a separate one for minorities. Recognising that although racial theory was responsible for the persecution of both groups they should not just be all put together.
Groups like women are a good middle ground between these extremes, avoid just outright suggesting that all women were persecuted and miserable under the Nazis and recognise that many German women supported Nazi ideologies and were happy with a structure that gave them some advantages like subsidised loans, etc. if they were content to stay home and have babies. Contrastingly there were clearly women who would be dissatisfied with the lack of choices or their limited status/choices in society.
What sort of questions should you prepare for?
In the previous HSC the question would have looked like “Assess the impact of Nazism on German society in the period 1933-39” – It was up to the student to select example from the dot points (culture, religion, workers, youth women, etc) to address this. A question in this format easily translates into a 10-15 mark possibility.
A lower range question might just ask you to describe one or some aspects of daily life under the Nazis. For example ‘Outline how life changed for Jews under the Nazi regime’
A broader question might ask you to discuss how Hitler himself impacted Nazi society in which case you explore Hitler as the origin of Nazi ideology and his influences.
