Meharry Medical College

Prairie View A&M University

It was established by two former slaves who had been elected to the state legislature during Reconstruction as an Agricultural and Mechanical college. It was the first public HBCU in the state of Texas.
Philander Smith College

It is affiliated with the United Methodist Church and is a founding member of the United Negro College Fund. It was started as a seminary. It is named for an American philanthropist. The college merged with the George R. Smith College of Sedalia, MO after it had burned down.
Jackson State University

It started as the Natchez Seminary until it moved to Jackson and changed its name. In 1934, it became a public institution, focusing on training teachers.
Selma University

Florida Memorial University

It began as the Florida Bible Institute in Live Oak, Florida. After violence against the school faculty, the school was moved to Jacksonville in 1892. It then moved to St. Augustine before settling outside of Miami in 1968.
Livingstone College

Tuskegee University

Began as a Normal School for teachers. Booker T. Washington was a teacher and principal of the institute. It is also a unit of the National Park Service for its historical significance.
Morris Brown College
