Founded February 25, 1837 as the first HBCU in the nation outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Founded by Quakers as "Institute for Colored Youth." It is the northern-most HBCU in the United States.
University of the District of Columbia

Founded in 1851 as the only public university in the District of Columbia. Was originally known as the "Normal School for Colored Girls."
The Lincoln University

Founded as the private Ashmun Institute in 1854 outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It has been a public institution since 1972.
Wilberforce University

It was the first private college owned and administered by African-Americans in the United States. It is affiliated with the AME Church.
Harris-Stowe State University

Started as a white teachers college in 1857. It them merged with an all-black normal school in 1954. It was added to the state university system in 1979.
LeMoyne-Owen College

It was started after the occupation of Memphis by Union troops during the Civil War to help education free blacks and escaped slaves. It was an elementary school until 1870. Today, it is affiliated with the United Church of Christ.
Clark Atlanta University

It is the first HBCU in the South. Atlanta University (1865) and Clark College (1869) merged in 1988. It has a doctoral program and is considered one of the top HBCU in the nation. It is affiliated with the United Methodist Church.
Bowie State University

It started as a teaching college in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1910, it moved to Prince George's County outside Washington, DC. It was the first HBCU in the state of Maryland.
Shaw University

It is a private Baptist college. Many HBCUs within North Carolina were founded by alumni from Shaw.
Virginia Union University

It is a private Baptist college in Richmond, Virginia. It was founded shortly after Union troops took control of the city after the Civil War. It was founded as a seminary and merged with the Richmond Institute in 1889.
Edward Waters University

Second-oldest private college operating in the state of Mississippi. It was founded by the Freedman's Aid Society of the United Methodist Church.
