sports highlights

The first half term back has been full of sporting events and activities both in and out of school. Thank you to Mr Janes, Director of Sport, and the PE Department, for the weekly updates on their teams and fixtures.

ESA Training

ESA Training / Trials as well as our all inclusive Sporting Clubs began at the start of term, beginning another fantastic year of Sport at LBS. As the Year 8 Elite Football Squad returned to training, they were also joined by their peers as we look to increase the squad size this year as the students transition to 11 a-side Football. Thank you to our Year 11 student, Bakary, who assisted Mr Janes and supported the students.

Year 7 Football Trials

The first Year 7 Football Trial took place and it was great to see so many students attend. Mr Rauf will be managing the team this season.

The team have entered two Cup Competitions, the League and a 7 a-side Tournament.

Sporting Success

The Sports Hall now has new banners, celebrating the success of our Football and Basketball teams last academic year.

Primary Provision

Mr Janes, Miss Lowdnes-Ford and Mrs McKeon visited Abbey Junior School to deliver Sport, Music and Dance Workshops. We worked with the entire Year 6 cohort, with students rotating around on a one hour cycle. It was great fun to work with the students and we hope they enjoyed our visit as much as we did. Our Primary Ambassadors who accompanied staff on the visit were an absolute credit. A Massive well done to the following students - Usman I. Andy N. Eisa A. Thomas G. Kenzo N. Elliott R. and Isaac D.

We also hosted six local Primary Schools last night as they competed in their Birmingham Regional Football League. The Schools that made the trip over were Woodhouse Primary, Welsh House Farm, St Mary's. Four Dwellings, St Catherine of Siena and Harborne Primary School. It was great to see so many Primary students enjoy our outstanding facilities and to compete at such a high level.

Year 7 Football

The students competed in their first ever competitive match for Lordswood, and they did not disappoint. A 5-0 win over Bishop Challoner in the first round of the West Midlands Cup made it an excellent start to the season. Ahmad K. was the stand out performer with five goals and an all round top performance.

Match Report by Mr Rauf, Y7 Team Coach

Never an easy task, nor an easy fixture when it comes to playing Bishop Challoner. Traditionally a well oiled and physical machine, they were in for a huge surprise when they came up against the might, and rather diminutive looking year 7's yesterday.

A game that was shortened due a combination of mishaps and delays, we eventually got going at 4.25pm. Tentative at first, the first half ended in a perfect chess-styled stalemate. Some context: the Year 7's had ONE training/trial session last week, where believe it or not, around 50 boys turned up all hopeful of making the final squad.

The team talk before the game and during half time was the same - 'stick to your positions boys and don't give an inch! Cover your man and stay strong.' At 0 - 0 it could have gone either way. But when a few positions were tweaked, and Hamza Boutoutaou was moved to a wide, forward position - it all changed. And dramatically might I add. Hamza scored all 5 goals, - yes, ALL FIVE. And goals that any pro footballer would have been proud of. A shame they weren't caught on camera. We did hear one of the oppo players, who being rather miffed at having to mark Hamza, remarked 'He's too good'. He was. Think of a Birmingham born Messi and Mo Salah rolled into one; but with the cheek, guile and modesty of a Lordswood PE teacher. That's Hamza.

Challoner went away a little jaded, and their 'hip hip hooray' at the end was equally jaded. Just a note - and this was reiterated during the post-match debrief; the whole team played magnificently, led by their talismanic yet unassuming captain Ahmed Kunu, and the marauding and bulldozer in defence that is Omar Taesan - all agreed that the goals Hamza scored would not have come had others not done their job well.

Well done Tanaka, Samyar, Alialmurtaja, Khaliq, An Khang, Mustafa, Ahmed K, Hamza B, Emanuel, Layth, Aiden, M Manseray, Kiyan, Abulay, Dorian.

Year 9 Football

The Year 9s hosted Colmers School on Monday in The Birmingham Schools' Cup. In what was an eventful game which was full of goals, Colmers came out victorious.

Man of the Match for LBS was Mustafa H. who produced a brilliant second half performance in goal.

The Year 9s progressed to Round 2 of the West Midlands Cup with a 5-0 victory over Turves Green.

Mr Mitchell's side had been working hard in training to develop their style of play and to develop their playing principles. Birson hit a Hat-trick, whilst Ara and Devonte chipped in with further goals. They will now host West Coventry Academy in Round 2.

Year 8 ESA

The Year 8 Elite Football team were in action on Tuesday night as they hosted Coleshill School in the Birmingham Schools' Cup, a repeat of last years fixture. This was the Year 8's first 11 a-side game and they adapted really well to the new format. Coleshill ran out 2-0 winners, both teams should be proud of their performances as they demonstrated high technical quality.

Man of the Match was Denzel F. for his outstanding defensive display and resilience throughout.

Year 10 ESA Football

The Year 10 Team travelled to Coventry for a West Midlands Cup Fixture. In the pouring rain, unfortunately, the boys did not return with the result they wanted. Their attitude and commitment were fantastic, they did not arrive back to School until 7PM because of the traffic but were in good spirits on the way home.

Man of the Match - Jonathan A. - A spirited performance that consisted of desire and resilience.

Year 11 Basketball - National Cup

The Year 11 Basketball team travelled to Shireland School in the opening fixture of their National Cup campaign. In what was a thrilling encounter, LBS came out on top in a 41-40 victory.

Jonathan A. was the Player of the Match, dominating the game through his ball handling, dribbling and points return.
