literacy highlights

Students at LBS have really loved getting back into our Literacy routines and showcasing the best of what we do. Ms Russell has been keeping us updated on all the ways students have been showcasing their literacy skills around the school during this first half term back.

Literacy Time

Our Year 8s have been working hard during Literacy Time, on their spellings, definitions and even reading comprehension.

Students throughout the school are practising essential literacy skills each morning such as spelling, grammar and comprehension.

Students are also receiving bespoke support and intervention through the LEXIA programme and small group delivery of Literacy Skill Builders.

It was also great to see peer reading going on in the Library as Shamesh in Year 10 supported Marius in Year 8 by listening to him read during Literacy Time.

Library Lessons

Students have loved being back in the library - the Junior Librarians have been helping organise the books, rotate the stock and check books in and out so that everyone has a book in their bag!

They have also been preparing their brand new Reading Journals, tracking their progress against the 150 challenge and writing book reviews to earn badges.

At LBS We Read More and Miss George's class really enjoyed their reading group in their library session... They're reading Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman and loving it!

And finally... 9.5 had a Blind Date with a Book this half term and got to take home a brand new book of their choice.. without seeing the front cover! They discussed not judging books by their cover and loved unwrapping their new read. We can't wait to hear all about them and see what they write about in their journals.

Student Librarians

The Junior Librarians have been helping to run the library during lessons and wanted to encourage our new Y7s to get stuck into their favourite 150 books.

LEXIA

Students have also started accessing our LEXIA intervention programme online in Year 10 - supporting our students with the highest CAGE / RAGE gap with bespoke literacy lessons each morning.

Groups in Year 8 and 9 are also accessing the provision through the 'Skill Builders' each morning, supported by our wonderful Literacy Tutors.

LBS 150 Challenge

It's been great to see students accessing the 150 challenge both in Library lessons and at lunch time! Books have been read, high quality reviews completed, book recorded...

and those all important badges earned to be worn with pride!

Elite Readers

And finally, R.J in Year 9 is the first reader for this Half Term's Elite Reader's book club!

Thanks to our partnership with the Bradford Literature Festival we have access to some brilliant new and upcoming Young Adult Fiction. The book we have chosen is 'BOY 87' by Ele Fountain.

"Fourteen-year-old Shif and his best friend Bini are ordinary boys with big ambitions, but their world implodes when they attract the attention of the military "giffa". Wrenched from their families, they’re sent to a remote desert prison, where their cellmates are barely clinging on to life. However, the boys’ arrival sparks hope in the imprisoned men, and they give everything to ensure their escape. Reaching the nearest town, Shif has only just begun the perilous journey which he hopes will end in safety and freedom."

R.J is already getting stuck in and can't wait to write his mini review before passing it onto the next reader! Please let RJ know if you'd like to take part and be one of the readers this Half Term, or even just ask him about the book!

#TAKE10 Campaign

The school took part in the #TAKE10 campaign from the National Literacy Trust in support of World Mental Health day. Here are the Vikings in Y8 showing their support and understanding of how reading can help boost your mental health.
