Back to School reading list

Our students have been busy readings lots this half-term. We've compiled a list of recommendations that can be read over the two week break, from spooky classics to back to school reads about navigating secondary school for the first time.

Cormac McCarthy - The Road

Cormac McCarthy's almost unbearably disturbing 2006 novel about the post-apocalyptic journey of a father and son across a desolate America.

The Road is considered a parable as a result of the theme of moral conflict throughout the story. The main characters are struggling both internally and externally with the choices they are constantly faced with. Even in the darkest hours, the man and boy are determined to hold on to their morality.

This one is better suited for older readers, who are looking to challenge themselves.

Sally Christie - The Icarus Show

British author Christie offers a haunting story about searching for friendship and beauty while enduring cruel taunts.

Early in the first term of secondary school, Alex learns how to deal with bullies: “Don’t React” is his motto. This book would be great for students in Year 7 who are navigating secondary school for the first time.

Tracy Deonn - Legendborn

Legendborn is a fantasy novel, that interweaves Arthurian legend into a modern setting. It follows Bree, a young girl who discovers a secret society of 'Legendborn' students, after witnessing a magical attack on her first night on campus.

This book can be found in our LBS Library.

George Orwell - 1984

Though the story of 1984 takes place thirty-five years hence, it is in every sense timely. The scene is London, where there has been no new housing since 1950 and where the city-wide slums are called Victory Mansions. Science has abandoned Man for the State. As every citizen knows only too well, war is peace.

This book can be found in our LBS Library and is also part of the 150 competition.

Daphne du Maurier - Rebecca

Rebecca is a 1938 Gothic novel written by English author Daphne du Maurier. The novel depicts an unnamed young woman who impetuously marries a wealthy widower, before discovering that both he and his household are haunted by the memory of his late first wife, the title character.

Perfect to read in the run up to Halloween!
