World Book Day

On Thursday 2nd March we celebrated another World Book Day, and it was great to see students and staff getting involved in this celebration of literacy and reading.

book character outfits

Staff members, Year 7 and Year 8 all had the opportunity to dress up as book characters, helping to make the day memorable.

We saw a range of costumes from Spiderman to Sherlock, and characters from Roald Dahl classics such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Matilda featured throughout the day.

We had characters from Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book and Michael Morpurgo's Private Peaceful.

student presentations

Year 7 students did presentations all about the exploration of Mars, while their peers listened attentively.

It is great to see students developing their oracy skills, as this is the foundation for so many other skills.

Drop Everything and Listen

We started our day with DEAL: Drop Everything and Listen during Literacy Time, where students were able to hear excerpts from novels, spoken aloud by the authors.

It was wonderful to see students listening attentively to the authors sharing their stories.

Literacy

Literacy remains at the heart of all we do here at Lordswood Boys School, and it was wonderful to see students engaged in their lessons throughout the day.

Our students are continually developing their focus, writing and critical skills, and this was evident throughout the day in how they conducted themselves in their learning.

It was fantastic to see Ali H. in Year 11 working attentively at 7:20am, reading and revising for his exams. This attitude will help him immensely in his upcoming GCSEs, and it is why reading is so important.

World Book Day Free Books

As part of World Book Day, booksellers liaise with publishers to create their £1 books, which can then be bought with vouchers that are given out.

We worked with our local W H Smith, to ensure we had copies of these books for our students. The free books will be given out in library lessons on the first week back during next half term. Students will be able to select the book that interests them the most, which the World Book Day organisation highlights is a crucial part in encouraging reading for pleasure.

Virtual Author Visit

As part of the events of World Book Day, on the following day Year 8 had the privilege of a virtual author visit, from Claire Fayers.

The students were inspired by her workshop, which was all about planning and writing fantasy stories. They shared ideas and plans and asked really insightful questions during the author Q&A.

Students will be writing up their stories for a chance to win one of our new signed copies of her book, Storm Hound

8.1 conducted themselves wonderfully, and Claire said they were a credit to the school.

It was wonderful to see literacy and reading celebrated thoughout the day!
