summer reading list

Whether you're staying at home or going away on holiday, summer is a great time to enjoy reading books in the sunshine. We've put together some book recommendations for students to stay entertained throughout the summer break.

Jenny Han - The Summer I Turned Pretty

The first in a series of three books, this novel is perfect summer reading. Centred around Belly Conklin as she spends her summers in the Beach House she goes to every year, she finds that this summer feels different to the previous summers...

The novel is all about family, romance, and the magic that summer creates, making it a great book to read by the beach or on a sunny day.

Casey McQuiston - Red, White and Royal Blue

This popular romance is all about Alex Claremont-Diaz, a first son of the United States, and his relationship with Prince Henry, a British prince. Starting out as rivals, forced together to salvage PR relations between Britain and America, the two begin to develop real feelings.

An adaptation of this novel is set to be released on Netflix on 11th August.

Tomi Adeyemi - Children of Blood and Bone

This fantasy novel is set in Orïsha, a country divided into magical and non-magical people, divîners and kosidán. The story follows the protagonist, Zélie Adebola, as she sets out to restore magic in Orïsha. Adeyemi has created a vibrant world filled with magic, danger and the power of hope.

It is Adeyemi's debut novel and the first in a planned trilogy, the second of which has been published.

This book is part of the LBS 150 Challenge and can be found in the LBS library.

Tove Jansson - The Summer Book

Published in 1972 by the creator of the Moomins, The Summer Book follows a six year old and her grandmother who both live together on a tiny island in the gulf of Finland.

It is a book full of wisdom and humour that distils the essence of summer into 172 pages.

Gabriel García Márquez - One Hundred Years of Solitude

With the whole summer break stretching ahead, summer is a great time to attempt reading a classic novel that we often struggle to find time to read.

One Hundred Years of Solitude is a great novel to dive into over the weeks away from school. It is a multigenerational story that follows the Buendía family living in the fictitious town of Macondo, founded by José Arcadio Buendía.

Make sure to keep reading as much as possible over the summer holidays!
