sports highlights

Students have been busy this half term, with league games outside of school and showing incredible hard work in their lessons and training. Thank you to Mr Janes, Director of Sport, and the PE Department, for their weekly updates on all the teams and their fixtures.

Year 10 basketball

The Year students have been working hard with Mr Noble as they prepare for the start of their league campaign. Mr Noble has focused on Zonal Marking to develop student game understanding, in preparation for their first league game.

Mr Noble's Year 10 team hosted Bishop Challoner for their first league game of the 2023-2024 season. A tight first half, our boys played fantastic defence, setting up a 2-3 zone and double teaming the other teams best player inside. In the third quarter, we started to build a resounding and comfortable lead, with Jonathan hitting three 3-point shots. Shamesh and Adeeb did an amazing job gathering rebounds, and Gersi and Terrell took care of the ball, controlling the tempo and playing some very energetic half court press.

Our bench provided a breather for the starters and even saw out the final two minutes of the game without conceding, gaining valuable experience for future games! They were patient in waiting to get on the court and followed the game plan well.

The final result was 40-24 to LBS.

Primary Provision

On Tuesday, we hosted two local Primary Schools as they competed in a Regional League Fixture. Yesterday we hosted a further eight local Primary Schools as they also completed their scheduled Regional Fixtures. We are delighted to host and support our local Schools to facilitate and further their sporting provision.

Rugby Provision

The Year 7 students have been enjoying their Rugby Unit of work in Physical Education lessons this week. Students have been focusing on Ball Handling and 1 v 1 situations. We are delighted to see so many students participating in a wide ranging curriculum that exposes them to various opportunities.

Physical Education Provision

Mr Deek's Year 7 class have been focusing on Leadership within their PE lessons this week. Students have been challenged to lead their own Warm-Ups, planning an activity and organising a small group. As a PE Department, we value the importance of students having opportunities to develop their Leadership qualities, students are also able to develop their confidence, self-esteem and resilience within these situations. We look forward to providing further opportunities throughout the rest of the term.

Year 7 Football Training

Year 7 trained on Thursday after School as they prepared for their upcoming League Game and Regional Tournament. Mr Janes was delighted with the amount of students who trained and showed a great enthusiasm for developing.

Year 8 Regional Football Tournament

Under the guidance of Mr Janes, the Year 8 ESA team hosted the Regional 9 A-Side Tournament on Tuesday evening, with the victorious teams advancing to the Semi-Finals. Facing off against the favored Kings Norton in their opening match, LBS put up a strong fight, with Marcin's goal keeping the game tied at 1-1 for the majority.

However, Kings Norton's quality ultimately prevailed, securing a 4-1 victory. In the subsequent match against Bournville, a fierce battle for the second spot unfolded. Despite LBS's dominance, the away goalkeeper's remarkable saves kept the score level. It was Mahdi K. who finally broke the deadlock with a thunderous finish, propelling LBS to a 3-0 triumph.

Year 8 ESA Cricket

Mr Preece's Year 8 team hosted Halesowen Cricket Club at LBS. The game was full of quality which was evident by the technical performances on show. Sachin B. scored 23 runs to gives us a good platform to build on.

Manraaj B. picked up the Player of the Match with his performance with the Bat and the Ball.

Year 11 Basketball

In the concluding fixture of the National Cup season, Mr Deek's Year 11 Basketball team faced Holy Lodge School on Monday night, securing a closely contested victory with a final score of 40-39. The return of Fallilou M, who had been sidelined throughout the season due to injury, provided a significant boost to the team. Reflecting on the season, Mr Deeks expressed satisfaction, stating, "It has been a very rewarding campaign for the boys, marking their inaugural year in a National Competition. Despite facing formidable opponents, the team exhibited commendable growth. Fallilou's return was pivotal, but the resilience of other players who stepped up in his absence was equally remarkable. Coaching this team has been a pleasure, and I hope they continue to pursue basketball beyond their time at LBS."

Year 10 Basketball

The Year 10 Basketball team celebrated a noteworthy victory, securing their third consecutive win of the season. Despite a slow start against Yardleys School, the team quickly adapted, implementing a man-to-man defence that stifled Yardleys' offense. Dominating the rebounds on both ends of the court, LBS's spread offense gradually dismantled Yardleys' defense, with notable contributions from top scorer Shamesh (12 points), Adeeb, and Jonathan.

As the game progressed, bench players gained valuable confidence and experience, earning additional minutes on the court. The final score of 46-13 reflected both the team's on-court prowess and their off-court sportsmanship.

Embodying the virtue of compassion, a focal point for the term, the boys demonstrated politeness and respect by shaking hands with Yardleys players and offering compliments and advice, acknowledging that it was their opponents' first game of the season. Congratulations to the team on their outstanding performance and exemplary sportsmanship.

Year 7 rugby

Mr Forrester has dedicated considerable effort to his Year 7 Rugby group this term, imparting essential skills such as ball handling, passing, and tackling.

Despite being a relatively new sport for most students, the class has exhibited outstanding responsiveness, wholeheartedly embracing the communication, resilience, and teamwork aspects inherent in the sport.

Mr Forrester is currently on placement with us until Easter, and we eagerly anticipate witnessing his continued contributions to his teaching journey.
