sports highlights

This half term has been full of amazing fixtures and sportsmanship. Thank you to Mr Janes, Director of Sport, and the PE Department, for their weekly updates on all the teams and their fixtures.

Year 10 West Midlands Cup

The Year 10 ESA Football team welcomed Archbishop Ilsley for a thrilling West Midlands Cup Round 2 fixture on Tuesday. The match proved to be one of the most exciting encounters yet, featuring a flurry of goals and non-stop intensity.

Despite Archbishop taking an early two-goal lead due to a couple of individual errors from LBS, the team managed to regroup by halftime. However, Archbishop extended their lead with another goal, presenting LBS with a significant challenge. The team, known for its resilience and character this season, showcased these qualities in abundance during the second half.

Amara, Omar, and Adeeb scored crucial goals, bringing the game level and hanging in the balance. Although Archbishop regained the lead, LBS didn't back down. Yonatan scored his first goal of the season, making it 4-4 and forcing the game into penalties. In the ensuing shootout, Archbishop secured a 5-3 victory, advancing to the next round.

Despite the outcome, LBS exhibited a spirited and determined performance that was truly commendable. The Man of the Match was awarded to Yonatan.

rugby development

The PE Department has established a partnership with Bournville Rugby Club to expand our Rugby Provision. One of their coaches has joined our PE lessons, imparting the fundamentals of rugby to our students and introducing them to external opportunities beyond school. We anticipate the continued growth of this partnership and look forward to further advancements in our rugby program.

Year 10 ESA Regional Tournament

LBS played host to the Under 15's Regional 9-a-side Tournament, welcoming Kings Norton, Dame Elizabeth, Bournville, and Harborne.

In a fiercely competitive evening, LBS entered the final against Dame Elizabeth with the knowledge that a draw would secure first place, while Dame Elizabeth needed a win.

Despite Dame Elizabeth taking the lead and applying pressure, LBS responded with a goal from Nathan N. Unfortunately, heartbreak ensued in the final minute as Dame Elizabeth was awarded a penalty, securing their victory and placing LBS in second.

The Player of the Tournament was Nathan N.

Year 11 Basketball National Fixture

The Year 11 Basketball squad marked their inaugural appearance in the National Cup when they welcomed Nunnery Wood from Worcester. In a highly charged match replete with skilful plays, it was the visiting team that asserted control during the initial exchanges, swiftly establishing a commanding lead. Despite this, LBS gradually found their rhythm, clawing back crucial points to exert pressure on Nunnery.

In a dramatic twist of events, the game was deadlocked in the 4th quarter. LBS had a golden opportunity to secure victory, but a missed pair of crucial free throws proved costly, allowing Nunnery to capitalise and secure two pivotal points. The visiting team ultimately emerged triumphant with a narrow 40-38 victory, and the contest stood out as a thrilling showcase of skill from both sides. Shamesh W. was recognised as the Player of the Match.

Year 9 Regional Football Tournament

LBS hosted the Under 14 Regional Tournament with Kings Norton and Harborne joining us for the competition. We faced Harborne in the first game, winning 3-2, and then the favourites Kings Norton, losing 2-0 to the eventual tournament winners. The students showed great resilience against Kings Norton as they defended for most of the game and remained competitive. The Player of the Tournament was Andy N.

Year 9 Football - West Midlands Cup

Our Year 9 Football Team hosted West Coventry Academy in a West Midlands Cup 2nd Round Fixture. The away side took an early lead, but the LBS team stayed positive and soaked up a lot of pressure in an attempt to stay in the game against a very good opponent.

Ten minutes before the final whistle, LBS grabbed an equaliser to set up a tense finish. West Coventry then scored two late goals to secure the victory, the effort put in from the LBS team was monumental. Player of the Match was Ara K.

Year 9 National Cup Fixture

Mr Deeks took the Year 9 ESA Basketball team for two National Cup Fixtures in the last week of November, St Peters in Wolverhampton and Bromsgrove Independent School.

In what was a great experience for the students, participating at such a high level and with such a professional format, the students represented themselves and the School exceptionally well. Player of the Matches were Denzel F. and Josh C.

Year 9 Basketball - National Cup

The Year 9 Basketball Team visited Nunnery Wood for a National Cup Fixture. The boys lost 50-32, leading the game after the first two quarters but ultimately Nunnery delivered an excellent come back.

Thank you to Mr Noble for coaching and taking the team. See his match summary below:

It was a pleasure to take the Year 9 Basketball Team to an away fixture at Nunnery Wood School in Worcester.

Despite facing a much taller and more experienced team, the boys played with great focus and effort. Playing zone defence for the first time, they managed to negate the height difference and were excellent on the fast break. At half time, we were only 6 points behind. Eventually the experience and offensive rebounds enabled Nunnery Wood to build a substantial lead in the second half, but the lads carried on battling and made every point difficult for Nunnery Wood. The final score was 59-35, with new student Shubur Akinade leading our team with 10 points.

The lads represented the school with perfect manners and behaviour from the start to the end and were complimented by the referees and opposing coach. A great experience for our lads and they will only improve moving forward.

Year 9 Basketball - National Cup

Mr Deeks' Year 9 hosted Thomas Telford School in a National Cup Fixture. Thomas Telford ran out 41-30 winners, with LBS pushing the away side all the way. Year 9 will host Shireland in their next Fixture. Big shout out to Fallilou M. who officiated the game.

Cricket links with Halesowen CC

Below are Mr Preece's match summaries from Lordswood Boys' vs Halesowen Cricket Club, and the Year 8 ESA Cricket team's match against KES Camphill:

On Wednesday night we had the pleasure of hosting Halesowen Cricket Club to play against our Year 8 team in a friendly indoor cricket fixture. It is the first time we have played against a Cricket Club.

We bowled first and reduced our opposition to 16-4 off of 3 overs, the experience of Halesowen showed as they excelled to a respectable score of 68-4 off of their 9 overs. Meaning we required a net total of 49 to win. Kamiel Mason and Sachin Banda taking 2 wickets apiece. A fantastic display of wicketkeeping from Phil Baldy, only conceding 1 bye.

It was our turn to bat, and we got off to an absolute flier, scoring 27 off 3 overs and the scoreboard continued to tickover. We finished on 87-2, a net total of 77 - Lordswood Boys Winning by 29 runs. Abubakr T. top scored with 15* runs and invaluable contributions from Kamiel M. (14 runs), Ali U. (11* runs) and Manraaj B. (10* runs).

The game was extremely well received, by both sets of players and parents. The Lordswood Boys' team were a testament to our school, they listened to every piece of advice that I gave and showcased their skills against one of the best cricket clubs in the Midlands.

In the penultimate week of term we took 6 students to play against KES Camphill in an indoor league competition. We batted first and scored a mammoth 119-1 off our 10 overs. With strong contributions from Sachin (29*), Manraaj (26*), Phil (24*) and Ali (18).

We were very good with the ball, when it was our turn to bowl. Our 2 debutants, Eron and Reon made lightwork of the KES Camphill top order, reducing the hosts to 32-4 off 4 overs. With the cricket twins finishing with figures off 2-19 and 2-16 respectively. Captain Ali finished off the tailend batters with figures of 1-6. Players of the Match - Eron and Reon.

Lordswood Boys won comfortably by 41 runs. Our students' attitude was impeccable. We go into the New Year top of the league.

Cricket action continues as we head to the Ageas Bowl in Southampton on Tuesday 19th December. We wish the selected 8 students across Year 7 & Year 8 the very best of luck at the Wicketz Tournament.

Manchester Trip

Just before the half-term break Mr Deeks, Mr Preece, and Mr Janes led the Year 11 Basketball Team on a thrilling three-day Basketball Tour to Manchester. The students engaged in a spirited fixture against a local school and received valuable training from a highly qualified coach. To enhance the overall experience, the group enjoyed a tour of Manchester United and took part in an educational session focusing on resilience and mindset.

Students were also able to attend a professional football game at Stockport County, where they even made it to the Sky Sports highlights by celebrating a goal with the home side. An evening of bowling provided some intense competition and lively fun. A huge thank you to Mr Deeks for organising the trip.

We look forward to seeing all the sporting success that the new year will bring!
