Reading Week

The final week of term marked the beginning of our Reading Week; an opportunity for students to explore a chosen novel in depth.

Year 10

Year 10 have been exploring the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

First published in 1960, the novel has become a classic of Modern American Literature.

The story follows the lawyer Atticus Finch as he defends Tom Robinson, a Black man who is falsely accused of raping a white woman. Told from the perspective of Atticus' daughter Scout, the novel explores themes of racial injustice and prejudice.

Our Year 10 students got a head start to ensure they were able to cover the book before we break up for Christmas. Pictured are students absorbed in their novels.

It was fantastic to see students focused and reading. Just marvellous to see students discussing key terminology and themes around race, class and hypocrisy, sharing examples.

Thank you to our English teachers for leading these discussions at the beginning of Reading Week.

Year 7

Our Year 7 students looked at Darren Shan's Cirque Du Freak, which follows the protagonist Darren Shan, a lover of spiders who attends an outlawed freak show with his friend Steve Leonard and encounters a vampire who can control his pet spider with his mind.

It was superb to see our Year 7 students focused on writing and a theme of suspense and horror created in the room.

Students also created their own 3D models of stages, and worked on designing some stain glass windows.

Year 7 Interviews

Our Year 7 Literacy Manager Mrs Choudhury interviewed some of our Year 7 students, to see how they have been finding Reading Week. Watch the videos below to hear their thoughts about the novel Cirque Du Freak, what they've been enjoying most during this week, and how Reading Week is supporting them in their learning.

Year 8

Year 8 have been reading Holes by Louis Sachar. This novel is told from the perspective of Stanley Yelnats, who is sent to Camp Green Lake, a correctional boot camp in a desert in Texas, after being falsely accused of theft.

The plot explores the history of the area and how the actions of several characters in the past have affected Stanley's life in the present.

Year 9

Year 9 have been looking at dystopian literature while reading Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451

Set in a future where books are burned instead of read, the protagonist, a fireman called Guy Montag, begins to question his choices.

Students have been exploring themes of censorship and control.

Thank you for everyone's support in ensuring students were engaged and having fun during Reading Week.
