Year 10 Reading week: 1984

1984 by George Orwell

Year 10 spent the week reading 1984, the famous dystopian tale by George Orwell. Published in 1949, the book looks forward to an imaginary future where England is ruled by a leader called "Big Brother". We follow the story of Winston Smith, a normal man who begins to question the authority of Big Brother and the Thought Police.

What did the Year 10s get up to?

Year 10 designed their own doors to Room 101 and created some wonderful poster presentations.

Room 101 Debates

They had some lively debates about which items should be banished inside Room 101.

The winner of the best Room 101 answer was Umer A. who argued 'People who say they don't have time to read' should be banished to Room 101.

Blackout Poetry

They also created some fantastic 'Blackout Poetry', building on the themes of censorship and control explored in the novel.

Blackout poetry is when you take a written piece of text from a book, newspaper, or magazine and redact words, in order to come up with your very own poetry!
