literacy highlights

21st March 2021

There is an important message that we must all collectively keep delivering and that is 'READ! READ! READ!

This week we have had the launch of 'The 150' challenge. It is fantastic to see so many students reading and enjoying books. All students deserve the opportunity to develop their reading skills and it is wonderful to see them take advantage of access to 100s of books, spoilt for choice and deciding which book to read first.

ACTION 1: During literacy time and library lessons, please ensure students have their books out and are ALL reading.

Once students have finished their reading, please direct them to completing the reading quiz and submitting the book review. Since the launch, as the Year 7's are isolating they have been completing book reviews and taking advantage of reserving books remotely, which is wonderful to hear. They have additional library sessions booked for Friday as they can not wait to take their books out and start reading. It is also very impressive to hear that Hassan M. (Cowboys) has read more than 7 books during our last lock down. With the launch of 'The 150' he was busy completing book quizzes after school so that he could climb on to the leader board and earn his spot for the end of year prizes. Please congratulate him for the outstanding effort.

ACTION 2: Please encourage students to complete their quiz/book review which can be done during library lessons, after school and at home.

We must also turn our attention to students back in the classroom and reflect upon our literacy during curriculum time. Can we ALL weave literacy tasks into our lessons with spelling tests, literacy starters and our important focus on extended writing. It is lovely to hear Miss Bedesha share excellence from several Year 7 students this week . Students adapt seamlessly to online expectations and put their all into every task. Students demonstrating the pride they take in their work and their increasing independence. Remarkable!

ACTION 3: Please plan for literacy activities and extended writing tasks in all lessons.

Thank you everyone for all your hard work. The provision we provide is only possible with every single one of us having a shared understanding and goal.

Thank you for your support, Mrs Kang.
