literacy highlights - 18/10/2020

18th October 2020

Dear colleagues,

Literacy is often associated with the ability to read and write. However, it is also about making sense of and engage in everything we read, write, listen to and talk about.

It brings great pleasure to see the students engage in their learning, support one another and develop through oracy. Rearranging desks is a quick way to change the environment to facilitate all of these. The Year 7 students are having fun while also accelerating their progress. Thanks Mrs Sillis for your hard work.

Just next door, there is powerful discussion and dialogue. Students organised perfectly with reading books, planners and all the tools they need to facilitate their learning. Thank you Miss Bedesha, it is inspirational to see you in action.

Read! Read! Read! Take every opportunity to remind the students.

It is superb to see students making improvements to their work following feedback from marking. This is an essential part of their progress. Please take the time to allow students to reflect and write responses every time you provide feedback.

Literacy in Art, superb to hear students articulate their ideas linked to different artists.

Thank you Mr Gayle for supporting the students.

As we approach the final spelling test of this half term, the time spent to practise spellings is critical. Please everyone take the time to ensure students complete their 25 word practise page ahead of the spelling test. This is their to help them. Remember encourage: Look, cover, write.

Fantastic focus during literacy time with oracy discussion. This student in the first picture was in a state of complete focus and meditation while listening and fully equipped with his planner, reading book and pencil case on his desk. Superb. Thank you Mr Smith for your excellence during literacy time, it is a pleasure to listen and watch.

Similarly, the level of engagement during literacy time with the Cowboys was also superb. Thank you Mr Aston for your hard work.

The Year 11 really are proud of the work they produce. Take the time to speak to them, their responses are mature and considered.

Leaders leading the stretching whilst practising the muscle names and thinking about the impact of exercise on the body...fantastic! Developing leadership skills and communication is a doorway to their future. Thank you Mrs O'Shaughnessy for facilitating this excellent environment.

I am sure you will all agree that the presentation performance the students gave during literacy briefing was exceptional. Progress at its peak! Mrs Greatrix, your efforts to support our students is truly remarkable. Thank you.

The power of exercise can not be underestimated. Healthy body means healthy mind. It was energising to see students moving to every clear instruction and direction given during their powerful training session. Thank you Mr Williams for leading and driving our students to the best they can be in everything they do.

Do not underestimate the commitment of our students, to do better. On Friday afternoon, they are engaged and focussed with their first external examination in Health and Fitness just round the corner on the 18th of November. Thank you Mrs O'Shaughnessy for your commitment in supporting these students, superb!

This is our school and there is so much to celebrate every single day. This is only possible with the commitment and hard work if everyone collectively. Please continue to drive standards, expect excellence and always insist on ‘First Time, Every Time’. It is only with this that we can lay the foundation to a stronger future.

Thank you for your support, Mrs Kang.
