NEW SCHOOL YEAR, NEW STUDENTS TO WELCOME

It's been a busy first week back at school with lots going on. Having celebrated another set of brilliant GCSE results with our Year 11 students (click here to see the headline GCSE results) during the Summer break and wishing them well as they start the next chapter in their education journey, we started the new school year with our trip to Alton Towers. Looking at the smiles on the faces of our students below, I'm sure you will agree that they enjoyed every moment of their rearranged visit which was postponed from the Summer term due to the soaring temperatures.

We welcomed our new Year 7 students at the start of this week. They have settled into secondary school life very well and have embraced our ethos to be determined, hard-working, confident and independent. As you are aware, Our ethos underpins everything that we do at Lordswood Boys' School and Literacy is at the centre of everything. We believe that every member of our community can be successful and, through strong academic and pastoral support, we provide a safe and respectful environment where our students can achieve. The pictures below show some of our new Year 7 students hard at work this week.

We have also welcomed our newest members of staff this week. You can familiarise yourself with the names and responsibilities of all our staff by clicking here.

Mr Janes, Director of Sport, is currently in the process of finalising our football playing squads for the upcoming season. He is also scheduling our requirement to fulfil Cup Competitions, therefore the fixtures are coming thick and fast.

Year 11 travel to St-Michaels in Sandwell on Tuesday 13th September for their Round 1 Fixture, and Year 9 host Summerhill from Dudley on the same night in their Round 1 Fixture. I look forward to updating you next week on how our teams have performed.

During the assemblies next week, Mr Janes, Director of Sport, will be sharing information with students about how they can get involved in the trails for our Elite Sport Academy (ESA). The ESA was introduced last year and provided countless opportunities for students to join either the Football or Cricket Academy. Both academies have formed strong links with regional and national Football and Cricket clubs. If you would like to find out more about Lordswood Boys' School Elite Sports Academy, you can email Mr Janes at: d.janes@lordswoodbosy.co.uk

In addition, Mrs Greatrix, Vice Principal, will be sharing some important information with the students about how we will be using Class Charts at school this year. We will notify parents/carers as to when Class Charts goes 'live' in school as you will start to benefit from being able to track and monitor your son's progress and interact with your son's teachers as they reward his effort in class. You can read through the parent information sheet by clicking here.

Following the spectacular Common Wealth Games held in and across Birmingham this summer, we would like to encourage families to try and visit the PoliNations festival in Birmingham city centre. PoliNations reflects on the UK’s complex histories surrounding migration and diversity whilst celebrating our differences, our roots, and our future, and emphasising the importance of access to green spaces and a healthy planet. The gardens that have been created in Victoria square are stunning to look at and full of interesting educational activities. You can find out more by clicking here.

Finally, This year our Open Evening will be on Thursday 29th September 2022 from 4pm - 7pm.We are also holding two Open Mornings on Monday 26th September and Wednesday 28th September from 9am - 12pm, and one Open Afternoon on Tuesday 27th September from 12pm - 3pm. Typically, Open Evenings are events for new families looking to choose our school for their son's Secondary education. Therefore, should you know of any families that are interested in visiting us on the dates and at the times published, please do share. In addition, given that some of you may have struggled to attend our Open Evening last year, I would like you to know that the event is available for you to attend too.

LITERACY BUILDS SUCCESS

With the news that Queen Elizabeth II passed away yesterday evening, we have gathered as a school today in remembering her life and service to our country. Students have engaged with discussions about her life, her family and the Monarchy.

As explained in our message to parents/carers earlier today, during the period of national mourning, schools are expected to remain open and students are expected to attend school as normal.

As always, please call us on 0121 464 2837, leaving a message if lines are busy, and we will support you.
