COLLEGE RE-LAUNCH & PARENTS EVENTS

Welcome to my weekly blog. There are a number of important updates for parents/carers including information regarding the Year 10 and Year 7 parents evenings.

Firstly, I would like to make you aware of two events that a number of students from Year 9 and 10 have been involved with this week.

Year 9 Forward Thinking Programme

On Tuesday 4th October, Mr Nyarko, Lead Professional for Maths, had the pleasure of taking nine Year 9 students to the University of Birmingham to participate in the ongoing Forward Thinking Programme.

The programme is targeted at gifted and talented young people from less advantaged backgrounds who are likely to have little or no knowledge of higher education, but who have the academic potential to consider future progression to university. Throughout the programme learners will participate in a range of on-campus activities, receive one to one mentoring support from undergraduates in school, and access bespoke information and advice materials to support the programme.

It is essential that students gain the experience of what Universities offer and aspire to the opportunities ahead at Post-16 and Post-18 studies. We are very fortunate to have formed that strong link with the University of Birmingham and currently have students from Year 8 to 11 participating in the programme.

The short video below provides an insight into the experiences and activities students participate in during their time at the University.

Year 10 Slavery Museum Trip

In addition to the Year 9 visit, on Wednesday 5th October, a group of thirty Year 10 students visited the International Slavery Museum in Liverpool as part of their Religious Education/PSHEE curriculum.

The International Slavery Museum increases the understanding of transatlantic, chattel and other forms of enslavement. Through their collections, public engagement and research, the exhibitions explore their impact and legacies.

They are a campaigning museum that actively engages with contemporary human rights issues and they address ignorance and challenge intolerance, building partnerships with museums, communities and organisations that have a shared vision.

I have no doubt you will agree that we must maintain a deep rooted commitment to discussing the lessons learnt in societies past and celebrate the change these lessons bring.

Whilst at the museum the students showed a tremendous level of attention and passion, asking numerous questions and engaging with the exhibitions on display.

Year 7 and 10 Parents Evening - Thursday 13th October

I would like to remind all parents of students in Year 7 and Year 10 we are hosting the first set of parents events on Thursday 13th October.

You son/s will have been discussing this with his teachers this week and bookings are being made ahead of the evening.

We would like to encourage ALL parents to attend the evening as it is important that you understand the progress your son is making in school.

Appointments can be booked from 3.30pm to 6.30 pm.

I look forward to seeing you on Thursday.

College Re-launch, 2022

I am sure many of you will have fond memories of being associated with a 'House' or 'College' during your time at secondary school. I am sure you will also remember the competitions that would run throughout the school year, where you would come face-to-face with the opposing team to win points for your House or College.

Here at LBS, we recognise that due to the Pandemic, our focus (and ability) to complete much of the College competition has suffered over the past two years, and we need to do something about it.

Therefore, please allow me to introduce to you our brand new College system at LBS.

The details are as follows:

  • The school is split between two Colleges...Midland College and Central College.

  • Your son will be a member of one College depending on the Literacy Group he is in (see below).

  • Each College has a Head of College. Mr King is the Head of Midland College and Mr Bradshaw is the Head of Central College.

Mr King, Head of Midland College

Mr Bradshaw, Head of Central College

  • Students will have the opportunity to earn or loose points for their College in a variety of different ways:

    1. Weekly Attendance - At the end of each week, the 24 Literacy groups will be ranked based on their attendance percentage that week. The literacy group in 1st place will receive 24 points. The Literacy group in 24th place will receive 1 point, and everything in between.

    2. Weekly Punctuality - At the end of each week, any student that has arrived late to school on any one day will gain 1 negative point per late mark towards his College weekly total.

    3. LBS Decathlon - Similar to that of a traditional decathlon, the LBS Decathlon is made up of ten events across the school year, one per month. These events range from Sporting events that take place on one day, to E-Sports events that take place over a whole month, to individual activities where students compete in 'knock-out' Tournaments.

  • Students will have the opportunity to nominate who they would like to be the College Captain and Vice Captain.

We are all very excited about this re-launch and look forward to sharing the videos and pictures from our first Decathlon event, the LBS Basket Ball Showcase, which will be taking place on Friday 14th October (the last day of this half-term) during period 5.

I cannot wait to see who takes the first trophy!

I would like to take this opportunity to remind all parents/carers that we break-up for the October half-term on Friday 14th October, and as published on our school term dates, we have a two week half-term break. We return to school on Monday 31st October. During the second week, Monday 24th October to Friday 28th October, there is a Football Camp running at school. You can find the details for this by clicking here.

As always, please call us on 0121 464 2837, leaving a message if lines are busy, and we will support you.
