From Ms Truman, Lead Professional for Geography

We are often asked "What do Geographers actually do?" The Royal Geographic Society has assisted us in answering this question this week with their engaging careers event that allowed our boys to ask Geographic professionals their burning questions directly.

These professionals included: Buckinghamshire Council Senior Town Planner Carlos, Maxar Technologies consultant Bhavaini, Capgemini AI app technology consultant Naomi and Adil GIS consultant for The United Nations. Each speaker was a holder of a Geography degree and displayed the wealth of valuable transferable skills that come from a quality Geography education. The personalised experience gave us direct insight into how these skills are used and valued in their varied careers.

As always, our boys ask pointed and pragmatic questions such as; "What impact does your job role have on UK society?" "What did your parents think of your choice to study Geography?" "Is there a lot of ethnic diversity in your field of work?" "What is the most important skill you have learnt?" and the professional speakers were thrilled with their level of engagement and interest.

During our review of the event it became clear that Adil was the boy's favourite speaker as he provided us with a personal account of his time assisting the UN in the Syrian conflict and really showed the humanitarian value of Geographic skills, as well as the potential earnings that come with them! We are looking forward to working with The Royal Geographic Society in the future to open up more fantastic opportunities for our diligent Geographers.

Valencia Football Tour - Years 7, 8 and 9

Thank you to all of the family members who attended the Valencia Tour Presentation at LBS on Tuesday evening. We invited in the Inspiresport Representative who shared further information around the trip. The numbers we had on the evening were fantastic and I know the students are really excited at the prospect of the event. To secure your son's place on the trip, we request a £150 deposit before we break up for Summer. This can either be paid via cash or bank transfer.

Please contact me directly for information on making payments using the email address below.

Further information will be sent out before the end of Half-Term with regards to the next steps. Please contact me directly if you have any queries - d.janes@lordswoodboys.co.uk

Year 7 Cricket

On Monday, Mr Preece took 10 Year 7 players and two Year 9 helpers to Edgbaston for a Chance to Shine Softball Tournament.

The students had the privilege of playing on the grass at Edgbaston; the same venue that hosted the Ashes just 2 weeks ago.

After winning our first 3 games very comfortably, we faced Washwood Heath Academy in the final game, who had also won their first 3 games, it was winner takes all.

Batting first we posted a very respectable 71 off our 40 balls, 24 of which coming from the first 10, thanks to Ali Usman launching several balls into the stands. It was our chance to showcase our bowling and fielding skills. The standout performers with the ball, Manraaj, Ali, Yusuf and Abubakr. All bowling good line and length, but the ball kept disappearing over the rope 4 or 6.

However, with several wickets from Ali and Abubakr meant that Washwood Heath only lead by 3 runs going into the final over, a wicket meaning -5 runs. Manraaj bowled a wide delivery down the leg side which enticed the batter to swing, the batter edged it and Phil Baldy took an incredible one-handed catch to seal the victory.

A massive well done to all the players and the 2 Year 9 helpers, received a special mention for their scoring and umpiring.

Year 9 &10 Cricket

On Tuesday evening, Mr Preece and Mr Deeks took a mixture of Year 9 and 10 students over to Windsor High School for a Cricket fixture. In what was a very competitive game, LBS secured 92 runs but unfortunately lost by four wickets. Player of the Match was given to Mikail Kamran who bowled superbly. Mikail bowled four overs and produced figures of 1-17.

LBS In-House Cricket

The LBS PE Department hosted their annual In-House Cricket Tournament that takes place during Cricket lessons. The winners of the Year 8 title this year were the Northern Super Chargers after battling hard throughout the four week showdown. Students enjoyed developing their technical aspects of the sport and then applying these skills in the competitive game-based situations.
