the big ambition

Welcome to my weekly blog - I hope you and your families are well and have had a good week.

It was fantastic to welcome so many of our Year 11 parents/carers into school on Tuesday this week. Seeing and knowing that our students are well supported at home will ensure they succeed in gaining the highest grades in their GCSE exams next summer.

Additionally, I expect to be able to share our validated KS4 performance progress data with parents/carers and the wider community from 12 October 2023. This is the date that all Secondary School performance is published by the Department for Education, providing families with a key insight to how well schools performed in the summer examination series. I look forward to updating you on how Lordswood Boys' School performed next week!

Support children and young people to take part in The Big Ambition survey

The Children’s Commissioner for England has recently launched ‘The Big Ambition’ to hear directly from children, young people, and parents across the country.

This is an opportunity to hear from all children, in every part of the country and in every setting. The survey will be used to encourage policymakers to think about children and young people’s needs, to ensure children’s voices are reflected in the decisions that will affect them in years to come.

Lordswood Boys' School plays a critical role in enabling as many students as possible to share their experiences. That is why I am encouraging all parents/carers to take part and help your son have his say on what is important to him!

Bikeability Updates

It is fantastic to see so many students travel to school by bicycle and to support those that currently do cycle and those that don't I would like to bring the following opportunity to your attention.

During the  October half-term, Bikeability are offering free sessions for Birmingham residents in 3 major city parks, see below. This is a great way to build confidence in riding a bicycle and to educate your son further in cycle safety.

One of our school ambitions is to encourage students and families to 'travel green'. Therefore, I would like to encourage you to make good use of this offer and contact bikeability using the email bikeability@theaws.org

English Curriculum Update

Ms George's Y11 English group took to the stage performing outdoor theatre, just like in Shakespearian times!

They were performing the Banquo's ghost scene from Macbeth and enjoyed a creative focus on stage directions and language choices in preparation for their written assessment later in the week.

They absolutely loved the opportunity to bring the script to life and take their learning out of the classroom.

Thank you Ms George!

Updates from the National Literacy Trust Birmingham

Tuesday 10 October is World Mental Health day and the start of the Take10 Reading and Mental Health Campaign that celebrates and supports the links between reading and mental health

If your child reads little and often, it can make a big difference to their well being – and it doesn’t always have to be a book! It can be a post-match report for Saturday’s game or a magazine interview with their favourite celebrity.

The right words can capture their interest and give them confidence. That’s why we are joining with the National Literacy Trust’s #Take10 event this World Mental Health Day.

Encourage your child to read things they enjoy at home – and feel free to take part yourselves.

For more information on Take 10 or to get involved, check out: https://literacytrust.org.uk/communities/take-10/

Also, there is a Literacy event running on Saturday 14th October from 12 - 4pm at Fort Shopping Park (B24, 9FP) called Fort Stories

The free event will feature FREE BOOKS for all attendees as well as an incredible line up of local authors for young people of all ages including a session at 2.45pm with Matt Windle - Rap and Poetry celebration (for teenagers). Matt is a local poet and founder of Empower Poetry and he will be helping young people get creative and celebrate Literacy!

I hope you can make good use of this information and I would be delighted to hear what your experiences are.

NOS Updates

The National Online Safety programme publishes a weekly #wakeupwednesday update for parents/carers. This weeks update relates to the online game 'AMONG US', as game that I am sure many parents are familiar with from listening to your son talk about it. The information within the infographics that the NOS produce are very informative and help direct parent/carers attention to the 'signs and sounds' of things that might not be right in how your son plays the game or interacts with others.

I hope your find this information useful.

The Year 9's hosted Colmers School on Monday in The Birmingham Schools' Cup. In what was an eventful game which was full of goals, Colmers came out victorious. Man of the Match for LBS was Mustafa Hussain who produced a brilliant second half performance in goal. The Year 9 team play again on Monday as they host Turves Green Boys' School.

Year 8 ESA

The Year 8 Elite Football team were in action on Tuesday night as they hosted Coleshill School in the Birmingham Schools' Cup, a repeat of last years fixture. This was the Year 8's first 11 a-side game and they adapted really well to the new format. Coleshill ran out 2-0 winners, both teams should be proud of their performances as they demonstrated high technical quality. Man of the Match was Denzel Fernando, outstanding defensive display and resilience throughout.

The Year 11's competed in a 9 a-side Regional Tournament last night as we hosted Kings Norton and Dame Elizabeth. LBS beat Kings Norton 3-0 before drawing with Dame Elizabeth 1-1. LBS now progress to the Semi-Finals which details will be shared once they have been received. Man of the Tournament was Alemi-Obey Gm who was a constant threat throughout.
