WORLD BOOK DAY - FREE BOOK VOUCHER

Welcome to my weekly blog and I hope you and your families are well and have had a good week.

As you will be aware, it was World Book Day yesterday and we had a great day in school with students and staff dressing up as characters from their favourite books. The images below provide a small insight to the activities throughout the day and I would like to thank parents/carers for supporting the day with arranging the costume for your son.

You can claim your free WBD voucher by clicking here.

A few weeks ago 70 year 9 and year 10 students took part in the Intermediate Maths challenge.

The Intermediate Maths challenge is a 60-minute, multiple choice challenge. The challenge encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques. The problems are designed to make students think. Most are accessible, yet still challenge those with more experience.

We are delighted to announce the list of students opposite who are due to receive an award for completing this challenge.

Certificates will be handed out during assemblies next week, and the students who have achieved a bronze, sliver or gold will receive gift cards.

We are so proud of the boys and we cannot wait to share this success with them during assembly.

MATHS CHALLENGE 2023

NATIONAL CAREERS WEEK, 5 - 11 June 2023

As you may be aware, next week sees the start of the National Careers Week across the UK.

From 1 January 2023, all schools must provide at least six encounters with a provider of technical education or apprenticeships for students in Years 8 to 13.

The DfE states: schools must follow this prescribed timeline:

Amongst a number of activities that will be happening across the week, you can see the schedule below for Thursday 9 March below.

I would like to encourage parents/carers to discuss these seminar events with your son/s to find out what he has learnt from each event.

In addition to the details above, at the start of each lesson on Thursday students will complete a 5 minutes starter activity that will introduce them to an online work experience video presentation followed by a 10 minute oracy task for teachers to discuss their own personal employment journeys, previous employments and then refer to the careers posters in their classrooms to specifically discuss the different career pathways for their subject area.

I look forward to sharing some updates from the week in next weeks blog.

Music schedules for week beginning 6 March 2023

Weekly music round-up from Ms Lowndes-Ford, Director of Music

Piano Lessons

It's heart-warming to hear how much the students are keen to attend their weekly piano lessons. Two extra students have also expressed an interest in attending one of the groups just this week. Excellent.

Student Leadership

Our Music Ambassadors have started volunteering to support some of our key Stage 3 music classes during their lunchtimes. This is a great way to help them develop their leadership skills and I am extremely grateful that they are so willing to interact positively with other students helping them make more progress.

Thank you to Jamie McDonald and RJ Taylor for your dedicated time this week!

Station Clock Event

On Friday 17 February, 28 students and 4 staff visited the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire to take part in studio recordings of their voices which will eventually feature on a new Station Clock which will be placed in a train station in Birmingham linked the the new HS2 network.

The students were excellent and very cooperative throughout the whole experience.

The composer and recording studio organisers were so impressed that they even gave some of our students opportunities towards the end of the day to show their talents in the studio including rapping and piano playing.

All of the recorded voices from both students and staff will form part of the audio sounds (chimes). The clock is due to be placed in Birmingham in approximately five years time meaning that our students will be contacted as young adults to go and see the clock once it has been completed and positioned in Birmingham.

New Melodica Club

Next Friday, 10 March, will be the launch of our brand new melodica music club which will be led by Jamie McDonald. This club will take place every Friday morning from 8am until 8.30am.

Five Year 7 students will have the opportunity to learn how to play the melodica.
