A SUPER WEEK AT LBS

Welcome to my weekly blog and I hope you and your families are well and have had a good week.

Year 9 Parents' Evening

Firstly, thank you to all of the parents/carers who attended the Year 9 Parents' Evening yesterday. It was excellent to see so many of you and to listen to the conversations being had with your son's teachers. Just over 80% of parents attended, and there will be follow-up communications with those who couldn't attend today and early next week.

I would encourage all parents to attend these events as they provide an invaluable opportunity to guide you through your son's progress and attitudes towards his school work.

For reference, the remaining events for the year are as follows:

I would also encourage any parent/carer that has not yet logged into their Classcharts account to do so ASAP. Again, the information that we share with you through this platform is informative for your discussions with you son at home.

If you need help in accessing your account, please contact your son's Head of Year using the details below and they will ensure you have the correct user login details.

DAILY NEWS...READ ALL ABOUT IT!

Year 8 students were so proud and pleased to see their creation of the very first 'Lordswood Gazette.' They have been working hard on learning the key skills required to be journalists, conducting interviews and drafting their articles on Life at Lordswood!

Thank you to Ms Russell, Associate Assistant Principal & Head of English for capturing the imaginations of these budding young reporters.

Year 11 Science required practical

The Year 11 students are well on their way to completing the required practical's for their Science GCSE course. Mr Jackson and his class have been learning about Hooke's Law and this week focusing on making salts by reacting copper oxide with sulfuric acid.

This practical learning really compounds student understanding in rediness for their GCSE exmas this summer, plus, practical learning is great fun!

Sport fixtures and training schedules for week beginning 6th February 2023

Weekly sports round-up from Mr Janes, Director of Sport

The Year 9 ESA Football team played against Bishop Challoner on Tuesday in a mouth watering top of the table clash. Bishop Challoner came into the game undefeated, the same record as Lordswood, but having played more games. Despite going behind twice, the Lordswood players showed outstanding resilience to fight back, running out 4-3 winners. Shamesh Williams was the hero after he secured his hat-trick and the winner in the final minute of the game.

Cricket practice continued this week with Mr Preece delivering after school sessions and Warwickshire Cricket coming in to support. The Year 9 ESA take on the University of Birmingham next week, a win will secure their place in the Indoor Cricket Finals.

The Fitness Suite has been very busy this week with loads of students using the facility. Students have been participating in Strength and Conditioning programmes which is great to see.

Climbing Wall Installation

We are very excited to inform parents' that on the 9th & 10th February we are having our very own, bespoke 25ft climbing wall installed in the Sports Hall.

I look forward to sharing the final pictures and experiences that students have using this equipment over the next few weeks.

PE Research Visit - 21st March 2023

I would like to make parents/carers aware that on Tuesday 21st March, we will be participating in an Ofsted research project for PE.

The visit will be conducted by a serving Ofsted inspector who will spend the day with the PE staff and speak with students about their experiences in PE at LBS.

Music schedules for week beginning 6th February 2023

Weekly music round-up from Ms Lowndes-Ford, Director of Music

Year 7 Music Ambassador Update

Over the past two weeks, our Year 7 students who initially attended interviews for the role of a Music Ambassadors in school have been on trial. Students involved have had to demonstrate reliable attendance to clubs, leadership in lessons and general support to the music department as well as attending the weekly Music Ambassador meetings.

Tonight, Mrs Lowndes-Ford will meet with our current Head Ambassadors to make the final decision of who will be officially appointed in Year 7. Our brand new Year 7 Ambassadors will be revealed next week.

Steel Pan Band

After a successful performance at our Christmas Concert by the Steel Pan Band led by Mr Clarke, it was a pleasure to watch a rehearsal and see the boys rehearsing The Pink Panther theme tune this week. The level of focus and enthusiasm was brilliant to see.

Piano Lessons

Last week, a number of students started piano lessons with Mrs Lowndes-Ford. All new students did really well and it was a pleasure to welcome our new students on board.

Well done to Devonte Matthews this week who has not only started piano lessons but has also demonstrated kindness and support to others during his classroom lessons during keyboard skill based work.

Year 7 Rewards Trip

Next Tuesday, the music department has arranged a trip to see the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra perform live at the Symphony Hall. Thirty year 7 students will attend as a reward due to their fantastic progress shown in classroom based lessons and / or clubs.

Station Clock Music Auditions

Next week, Mrs Lowndes-Ford will be holding auditions open to Year 7-10 students who would like to appear on a recording of a new Station Clock that is going to be placed in a well known station in Birmingham. The clock will not chime like a standard clock does,  Instead, it will consist of voices. Our school has been selected to take part and thirty places will be available. Successful applicants will visit a recording studio at Birmingham Conservatoire to record their voices on the morning of our final day of this half term.

Further information will be shared next week so please watch this space!

DJ Workshops

Today, 6 Year 10 and 5 Year 8 students took part in a DJ workshop with our regular DJ instructor 'Earl'. The boys were really engaged and it was lovely to see them in a relaxed environment developing new skills.

I hope you have a good weekend and I look forward to updating you with more news next week. Until then you can always contact me directly at: l.williams@lordswoodboys.co.uk
