Welcome to my weekly blog and I hope you and your families are well and have had a good week.

I hope those of you celebrating Eid Al Adha this week enjoyed the opportunity to gather with friends and family to mark the occasion. It has been a delight to discuss the event with students in school and listen to how they celebrated.

Furthermore, I know that many families and local communities will have celebrated the 75th anniversary of Windrush arriving in the UK. Local Poet, Playwright and author, Benjamin Zephaniah has recent published a new book titled 'Windrush Child'. You can listen to him talk about the book in the video below.

Bring it on Brum! Summer Holiday Clubs.

Bring it on Brum! is running FREE activity clubs in Birmingham for those children and young people aged 4-16 who are eligible for benefits-related free school meals. Throughout the summer school holidays, each club runs for up to 4 weeks and each child is eligible to attend a maximum of 16 sessions.

Activities include sports and games, arts and crafts, cookery, dance and music. Programmes will vary depending on the type of provision and location of each club, but every day young people will get a nutritious meal served up for free!

Bookings for summer holiday clubs will open from Monday, 3 July 2023 at: www.bringitonbrum.co.uk.

The website will be updated regularly as new providers are confirmed so if families cannot find a suitable holiday club straight away, they should check back regularly.

Can’t attend a face-to-face holiday club? For families with children who are not able to access face-to-face holiday clubs, activity packs are also available for the summer school holiday. Packs are available one per eligible child for primary or secondary age.

Families can register for a free summer activity pack from Monday, 26 June 2023; registrations close on Wednesday, 12 July 2023 or as soon as all activity packs have been allocated. More information on the activity packs and how to register can be found at: Bring it on Brum Activity Packs

Booked but can’t attend? During some of the earlier programmes, we experienced a number of non-attendees. We would encourage parents who book activities for their children and can no longer attend, to kindly contact the provider and cancel the booking so the space can be given to another child.

Teachers' Strikes Action

I am sure that you will already be aware that on Wednesday, 5 July and Friday, 7 July, some teachers that work in schools in England are due to strike again.

Following my previous communications with families regarding the ongoing dispute and in an attempt to limit the impact this action has on our students, I would like parents/carers to know that Lordswood Boys' School will be open to ALL students as normal on both days.

Some families will also be aware that Wednesday, 5 July was scheduled to be the Year 6 transition day for Birmingham schools. The transition day has now been moved and rescheduled for Wednesday, 12 July.

Year 8 Cricket

Mr Preece's Year 8 Cricket Team travelled to the University of Birmingham on Monday as they continued their league campaign. LBS Music 250 Badges

A reminder to all students, if you have recently gained more badges towards the LBS Music 250, please see Mrs Lowndes-Ford next week to collect them. There are still a number of students who need to collect earned badges. There are also a number of students who have gained their first bronze badge so please come and check!

Our Year 7s have been working on a 'Battle of the Bands' task this week, rising to the challenge of writing their own short compositions in one lesson. The composition had to include a variety of independent music parts combining together as one whole band piece. Well done to the Year 7 Bills and other additional students on Tuesday for rising to the challenge.

Music Step-up

Our Music 'Step Up' course continues to run every Thursday after school with our external music provider B Music. Thanks to Toni and Sam from B Music who have organised these weekly sessions. The students have been working on creating their own compositions using Ableton software and have been learning how to DJ and produce music during the summer term.

I hope you have a good weekend and I look forward to updating you with more news next week. Until then you can always contact me directly at: l.williams@lordswoodboys.co.uk
