WEEKLY ROUND-UP

Welcome to my weekly blog and I hope you and your families are well and have had a good week.

There is a lot of information to share with you this week; progress and exciting events in school, more sporting success, updates regarding half-term activities and the national teacher strikes. Please take some time to digest all of this information and don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Significant moments in time

As you may be aware, today is Holocaust memorial Day. Mrs. Thompson, Lead Professional for Humanities would like to share the following details:

To help mark this important event, the Holocaust Education Trust hosted a live webinar yesterday (26.01.23) with a Holocaust survivor, Ruth Posner. A selected group of Year 9 students were invited to listen to this webinar and also had the opportunity to put questions to Ruth.

This was an incredible opportunity for some of our students to hear a first hand testimony of the Holocaust, helping them to personalise the victims of this dreadful event as well getting them to think about how we can still learn lessons from the Holocaust today.

Please some pictures of the event below, as well as Shayaan's account of what he learnt from the webinar.

The Battle of Agincourt

Sticking with the History curriculum... Year 8 have been completing a homework project over the last few weeks. The homework was to create a memorial to the Battle of Agincourt as part of their study on the Hundred Years' War. The top three pieces of work can be seen below:

The first place winner created a fantastic model of the Agincourt battlefield including the ingenious use of cocktail sticks as longbows!

Second place went to William Simmons who decided to create a simple but poignant stone memorial.

Third place went to Andy Nguyen who created a gravestone to remember those who lost their lives at Agincourt.

Congratulations!

Sport fixtures and training schedules for week beginning 30th January 2023

County Cricket Selections

Mr Preace, teacher of PE is pleased to share that the following students have been selected by MCC to represent Wolverhampton for Under 16's Cricket;

Simon Dhillon

Mohit Sharma

Gaskirt Singh

The students attended trials which saw over 90 trialists from across the West Midlands. All 3 students were successful and will begin training in the coming weeks.

The MCC provides brilliant initiatives in areas of diversity in order to make cricket accessible for all. Our 3 students will benefit greatly from bespoke cricket training and by playing games against the country's very best U16's players.

We would like to congratulating them on this exciting and excellent achievement. Well done.

Weekly round-up from Mr Janes, Director of Sport

We have enjoyed a fantastic and busy week at LBS with our sporting provision. As always, we had Warwickshire Cricket Foundation in on Wednesday to deliver a session with our students. We are very proud to be the host school and to create such a beneficial link with expert coaches.

The Year 7 ESA Football squad trained on Wednesday as they prepare for a busy schedule over the next few weeks. The Year 9 ESA Football team also trained on Thursday as they begin their preparations for a league game against Bishop Challoner next week. Mr Preece oversaw the Year 8 Football team on Monday for a cup fixture, unfortunately the boys were on the losing side against a very talented Coleshill team.

Mr Deeks was busy this week with our Basketball provision, with the Year 8 team competing in a three way tournament against Bishop Challoner and Kings Norton Boys' School. Mr Deeks also took the Year 9 team to Kings Norton again on Wednesday night, with the boys coming away victorious 29-18. Mr Deeks completed the week last night with a 46-33 victory at Ark St Albans. The Year 10 side have won three from three and sit top of the league. Mr Preece took the Year 7 students to a Basketball fixture at Kings Norton Boys' on Tuesday, the boys performed well against a strong opposition who eventually won the game.

We look forward to sharing more updates next week.

National Strike Action

You will be aware that there are national strikes set to affect schools in the coming weeks. The first strike day is scheduled for Wednesday 1st February.

I would like all parents/carers to know that Lordswood Boys' School WILL NOT be closing throughout the proposed strikes. Therefore, it is important that students attend school as normal on all of the dates proposed regardless of how this action affects other local schools.

Should you have any questions about this, please do not hesitate to contact me.

I hope you have a good weekend and I look forward to updating you with more news next week. Until then you can always contact me directly at: l.williams@lordswoodboys.co.uk
