Family Hubs & best start for life

Welcome to my weekly blog - I hope you and your families are well and have had a good week!

We've experienced an outstanding week at school, marked by numerous accomplishments, milestones, smiles, and successes worth celebrating. The information below aims to offer you valuable insights into these achievements.

Additionally, I want to bring to your attention the Family Hubs' project, available for families residing in Birmingham.

The Family Hubs initiative is a government project focused on ensuring children have the best possible start in life. Its objectives include enhancing access to services for all families, children, and young adults in Birmingham requiring support throughout the journey from 0 to 19 years (25 with SEND). The project also aims to strengthen connections between families, professionals, and service providers, placing relationships at the core of family information, assistance, and support. Acting as an effective single 'front door,' it streamlines the process for families to access necessary help and enhances the overall support available. This support encompasses areas such as parenting guidance, assistance with home learning and early language development, support for parent and infant mental health, as well as advice on relationships and infant feeding.

Family Hubs and ‘Best Start for Life’ is a physical and online service. You can find lots of information, advice and guidance on their website:  www.birmingham.gov.uk/info/50295/family_hubs

You can find all of the relevant information associated with the details above on our school website by using the link below and by reading the Family Hubs' January Newsletter below.

Dance, Performing Arts and Extra-curricular updates

From Mrs McKeon, Director of Learning of Foundations Studies and Extra-curricular learning

Performing Arts

There are less than two weeks until ‘The Lion King’ premiers at Lordswood Boys’ School. Rehearsals have now increased and the cast have started practicing with the school band. There is such a buzz and excitement in the school about the production and we cannot wait for you to be a part of it. Tickets will be on sale from Tuesday 30th January. Tickets are free of charge and can be collected from Mrs Davis-Musabayana or Mrs McKeon.

Extra – Curricular

We took our Debate Team to compete in a friendly competition with Ninestiles An Academy. Miss Baker led the British Parliamentary style debate, the subject was ‘This House Would Explore the Universe’ - we argued against. It was a tense evening; both sides argued with professionalism and confidence. Ninestiles were really impressed with our students and couldn’t believe that this was our first competition!

Ninestiles scored 35/50 and Lordswood scored 37/50!! A massive congratulations to the boys. They are so proud of their win and excited for what the future brings!

NOS Updates - 26 January 2024

The National Online Safety programme publishes a weekly #WakeUpWednesday update for parents/carers. This weeks update relates to 'Rumble'.

Conceived as giving independent content creators equal representation in the online space, Rumble has found something of a niche in restoring a voice to influencers who have been blocked from similar platforms. It’s become particularly renowned as a forum for political debate, with some prominent account holders’ choice of subject matter attracting a degree of notoriety.

Indeed, a study by the USA’s Pew Research Centre found that the platform’s most popular topics included gun laws, the January 2021 Capitol riots and Covid vaccines. Many parents and carers may feel that these sensitive topics – when addressed in a less-than-sensitive manner – aren’t suitable for young users. This #WakeUpWednesday guide attempts to get a feel for Rumble.

I hope your find this information useful.

Sport fixtures and training schedules for week beginning 29 January 2024

Weekly sports round-up from Mr Janes, Director of Sport

Year 7 Football Training

Year 7 trained on Thursday after School as they prepare for their upcoming League Game and Regional Tournament. Mr Janes was delighted with the amount of students who trained and showed a great enthusiasm for developing.

Year 8 ESA Football

The Year 8 ESA team trained on Thursday as they prepare for their Regional 9 A-Side tournament next week. The students will face Kings Norton, Dame Elizabeth, Harborne and Bournville.

Year 8 ESA Cricket

Mr Preece's Year 8 team hosted Halesowen Cricket Club on Wednesday evening at LBS. The game was full of quality which was evident by the technical performances on show. Sachin Banda scored 23 runs to gives us a good platform to build on. Manraaj Benning picked up the Player of the Match with his performance with the Bat and the Ball.

Year 10 Basketball

Another great win for the Year 10 Basketball Team, who are quickly becoming a very physical and difficult team to play against

Our two guards (Gersi & Terrell) controlled the game from the start, with Gersi proving to be impossible to defend when driving to the basket. Rebounds were dominated by Shamesh, Adeeb & Jonathan, taking complete control of any second ball on offence or defence.

The players who came on from the bench also played very well and gained some valuable experience. They have listened well at practice and applied what they have learnt. Demarco did a fantastic job defensively and Shubur was very solid in his first time playing under 15’s.

Going into the fourth quarter, Saint Thomas Aquinas only had 9 points, which shows an incredible defensive performance all round. They finished with 16, averaging 4 points (2 baskets) per quarter. Jonathan in particular impressed with some incredibly athletic blocks that could have come straight from a NBA highlight real.

Most importantly, Saint Thomas’ Staff and Team were extremely impressed by our boys attitude, performance and the way they carried themselves. The boys all shook hands and we will look forward to hosting them at the return game at Lordswood.

Staff Netball

Staff will go head to head on Wednesday next week in the termly Staff Sports Event. Mr Noble and Mrs Lea will Captain the sides and both are ready for the game. Mrs Lea has a very impressive playing background, Mr Noble will be hoping he can transfer his Basketball ability.

GCSE Physical Education

Mr Janes' Year 10 GCSE group delivered in class presentations this week as they analysed Sporting Performances. The students were fantastic, demonstrating teamwork, communication and higher order thinking to really challenge themselves.
