EID mubarak

Welcome to my weekly blog and I hope you and your families are well and have had a good week. Parents & Careers will have received the Trips letter earlier in the week. The first instalment is due on the 23 April.

This year, Ramadan is being observed between the 22nd of March to the 21st of April 2023 and its end is marked with the celebration of Eid ul Fitr, after seeing the first crescent of a new moon.

Eid-ul-Fitr is also known as Meethi Eid as on this day, devotees break their fast and start the new month of Shawaal on a sweet note. Thus, preparing sweet dishes like Sheer Khurma and Kimami Sevaiyan which are an important part of this festivity.

As many of our LBS families prepare to celebrate, we would like to wish everyone a joyous and memorable Eid with your loved ones. Let the beauty of this holy festival fill your hearts with joy, peace and serenity.

Eid Mubarak to you and your family!

Happy Vaisakhi

Wishing all of our Sikh community a very Happy Vaisakhi

Vaisakhi is a festival to celebrate the birth of the Khalsa. In April 1699 the 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji tested the commitment of thousands of Sikhs. The first five to pass his test, were initiated into the Khalsa. These five men came to be known as the Panj Pyare (five beloved ones).

At Lordswood Boys’ School, we celebrated Vaisakhi with all the students. The staff came in traditional Indian suits and we shared Indian food together with samosas given out to all the students. The students enjoyed learning about the importance of Vaisakhi.

College Event 6 - 7-A Side football

With Midland winning every event so far the pressure was on Central to come up with a win - and they delivered! On a slightly overcast last day of term the whole school made its way out to the Astroturf to watch the 6th event of the LBS College Decathlon. There were 4 simultaneous matches taking place with each year group competing for the bragging rights. In the combined Year 7 and 8 match it was a nail biting 2-2 draw in normal time with Midland winning the penalty shootout. In Year 9, a very dominant Midland team were victorious by a scoreline of 4-2, where the central team showed great fight to keep going from a 3-0 scoreline during the match. The Year 10 match was a closely fought contest with late goals causing lots of excitement to the end for the onlooking fans, with the match finishing 2 -1 to Central following a late winner! The Year 11 match finished 3-2 to Central. There were nervous times for Mr Bradshaw (Head of Central College) as Year 11 team were cruising at 3-0 but 2 goals in the 2nd half for Midland gave some hope to Mr King, but sadly it was to no avail.

A really positive event, where all students were involved, with plenty to cheer and leaving the scores close leading into the next 4 events. It is worth noting for students that attendance and punctuality also plays a vital role in the points that they can earn for their college each week, with the highest Literacy Group earning a potential 24 points each week.

Weekly sports round-up from Mr Janes, Director of Sport

Football Update

The Year 9 ESA Football Team secured the Birmingham School's League Title this week. The PE team received the notification that the undefeated team had secured the trophy after their recent win at Queensbridge School.

The students have demonstrated outstanding resilience, drive and togetherness to achieve this accolade. Mr Janes made the following comments -

"I am delighted for the students. They have trained relentlessly all year and have really developed their tactical understanding of the game which has been underpinned through their results. They have beaten some really strong schools on this journey and had to put in a lot of time in terms of travelling to fixtures and competing. As a school we are proud of their achievements and I look forward to seeing their continual development."

A HUGE CONTRGRATUALTIONS TO THE YEAR 9 ESA FOOTBALL TEAM. WELL DONE.

Music schedules for week beginning 24 April 2023

Weekly music round-up from Mrs Lowndes-Ford, Director of Music

Extra - Curricular Clubs

Please note that our extra - curricular clubs have started again this week and new timetables of our music clubs and Elite Music Academy activities can be seen above.

Some of the clubs have had to be rescheduled, therefore it is essential that you check it carefully.

Thank you to Mr Southall and Mr Jackson who will be running the guitar club this term. This has now moved to Monday after school from 3.05pm.

If you are a member of both the Vocal group and guitar club which both rehearse on Monday after school please see Mrs Lowndes-Ford so you can arrange a rotation. This will mean that you will be able to attend both clubs if you wish.

We have launched three new clubs this week and the music department has been full of enthusiasm, laughter and skill building this week.

New Music Clubs

Thank you to Mr Tulloch who has joined the music department for the summer term. Mr Tuloch is an experienced music producer and music technology specialist, songwriter and rapper.

It was great to see Year 7 and 8 students using our computer software to make their own compositions

With the launch of our brand new Rapping Club, I was extremely impressed to see some students already willing to stand up in front of their peers to showcase their first verses of their own raps in one session!

Thanks also to Mrs Grehan (an outside music practitioner) who has started working with some of our students on a DJ and Music Producers' course called 'Step Up'. This has launched for the first time this week and those involved will have the opportunity to attend a summer school and create their own EPs.

Keyboard Club and Steel Pan Band

The music clubs have made a great start to rehearsals this week. It was wonderful to see so many boys willing to attend keyboard club and improve their skills on Tuesday at 8am.

The Steel Pan Band never ceases to amaze me. They improve every week! They are currently working on The Pink Panther theme.

Piano Lessons

Due to Eid celebrations today, please note that piano lessons with Mrs Lowndes-Ford will commence from next Friday to ensure that all students involved will not miss out on a lesson involving other group members.

Times of your lessons will be posted on the music lesson orange notice board outside of the main music classroom ( G15).
