Welcome to my weekly blog - I hope you and your families are well and have had a good week!

Last half-term, our entire school came together for an exhilarating dodgeball event, and what a turnout it was! A huge shoutout to all participants for making it a truly memorable occasion. The excitement was palpable, and now, the moment you've been waiting for—the results are here! Watch the video below to catch all the action.

Our thanks to all those involved for the hard work that went into organising and delivering this event and to Ms Shoker for making the video.

NOS Updates - 19 April 2024

The National Online Safety programme publishes a weekly #WakeUpWednesday update for parents/carers. This weeks update relates to 'ENERGY DRINKS'.

While the short-term benefits of energy drinks can be attractive, it's not wise to ignore the potential health risks. Consuming these beverages regularly can have negative effects on the heart and blood pressure, and even cause dependency on these products to keep users’ energy at a ‘normal’ level. Factoring in that it’s illegal to sell these drinks to under-16s, the rise in children and young people using energy drinks is a cause for concern.

This marked increase in young people using highly caffeinated drinks to supplement their energy has heightened the risk of these health issues arising in children – at a time in their lives where such impacts can have greater, longer-lasting consequences. This guide addresses these possible hazards, letting you know how to minimise them for children and young people who like the occasional can.

I hope your find this information useful.

Dance, Performing Arts and Extra-curricular updates

From Mrs McKeon, Director of Learning of Foundations Studies and Extra-curricular learning

KS3 students are currently studying and learning about the traditional dance ‘Kpanlogo’. Ghanaian dance is rich in culture and history, with each movement telling a story or conveying a particular message. Our students are not only learning the dance moves but also connecting them with their music lessons. Integrating different aspects of culture and art provides a more holistic learning experience. Students have created high quality choreography demonstrating impressive rhythm and musicality.

Over the next week, The Elite Performance Academy will be launched. This will run alongside our Elite Sports and Music Academy. The purpose of this programme is to develop excellence in the Performing Arts and to promote an artistic community at Lordswood Boys’ School. Students that have been selected have demonstrated exceptional skill in both Dance and Drama, outstanding commitment to extra-curricular events, leadership, respect and excellent work ethic in lessons.

The Elite Performance Academy will provide opportunities for students to develop leadership skills and serve as mentors or role models to their peers, the Elite Performance Academy can create a supportive and collaborative environment where everyone can learn and grow together. Encouraging students to share their experiences, techniques, and insights can not only enhance their own understanding and mastery of their craft but also inspire others to reach for their goals and push the boundaries of their creativity.

Watch this space for more information on the Elite Performance Academy.

Sport fixtures and training schedules for week beginning 22 April 2024

Weekly sports round-up from Mr Janes, Director of Sport

Orienteering

Students participated in their first set of Outdoor Adventurous Activities this week through the form of Orienteering. Mr Deeks did a superb job at planning the details around the syllabus, with Mr Preece also doing a fantastic job at setting up the course. The students really enjoyed navigating their way around the School, developing their map reading skills as well as their ability to work as a team.

Primary Provision

Last week, we hosted 60 Year 5 students from Harborne Primary School. Students spent the morning here at Lordswood, participating in Sport, Dance and Music Workshops. The students had a great time and were very appreciative of the opportunity to experience life in a Secondary School setting. We look forward to hosting more of our local Primary Schools over the next few weeks.

Examination Physical Education

The Year 11 Sports Studies group have been working hard this week as they prepare for their exam in May. Students completed a Mock Exam on Monday within a formal setting, before enjoying their last practical session on Thursday. Mr Deeks' team ran out 3-0 winners against Mr Janes' team, as you can see they enjoyed the victory.
