CELEBRATIONS

Welcome to my weekly blog and I hope you and your families are well and have had a good week.

It is an absolute pleasure to announce that 3 students from LBS have had their writing published nationally in 'THE POWER OF POETRY' book which is founded and created by the Young Writers Association.

Congratulations to Gurinder Bunger, Stanley Gyamfi and Ahmad Elghabdan for this great achievement and our thanks to Mrs Woosen-Henry for her work supporting these and other students with their submissions in this annual competition.

Please take a moment to read through the winning poems below. You can read more about the Young Writers Association by clicking here.

Well done boys'!

Design & Technology students have started to focus on and work with metals and polymers this half-term.

The current project brief is to design, make and finish a bottle opener.

As you can see from the examples opposite, the students have developed key skills in manipulating these materials, whilst demonstrating determination and patience to create a fully working product when using these more complex materials.

Well done!

Sport fixtures and training schedules for week beginning 27th February 2023

Weekly sports round-up from Mr Janes, Director of Sport

The Year 9 ESA travelled to Kings Norton Boys' School in a league fixture on Wednesday evening. A win would see the side move to the top of the league, the boys were exciting and focused at the prospect. LBS returned with a 3-1 victory, Sakou Suso hit a Hat-Trick in what was a very competitive game.

Year 9 Basketball hosted a three-way tournament on the same evening, with Hodge Hill and Turves Green attending the event. LBS won both of their games, beating Turves 20-4 and winning a close encounter against Hodge Hill 25-23. The two victories maintained the team's unbeaten record this season, winning six from six.

The Year 11 Football team progressed to the Birmingham Schools' Semi-Finals with a fantastic victory over North Birmingham Academy. Maseeh Haroon scored two and Alemi Obey-Gm also got on the scoresheet. Thank you to Mr Williams, Mr King, Mr Calder and Mrs O'Shaughnessy for making the trip over to support the students.

Music schedules for week beginning 27th February 2023

Weekly music round-up from Ms Lowndes-Ford, Director of Music

Station Clock Trip

Today, a group of Year 7-10 students are visiting the recording studio  at Birmingham Conservatoire to record their voices for a new Station Clock which will be placed in a central part of Birmingham.

Instead of the clock chiming, voices will be emitted from this incredible piece of art.

Photos of this experience will be shared after the half-term break.

Year 7 Music Ambassadors

A number of our Year 7 students have been on trial recently to showcase their leadership skills in order to become Music Ambassadors.

Successful applicants will be informed later this afternoon. Mrs Lowndes-Ford would like to thank all of the students who worked so hard and have shown a commitment to the department over the past few weeks.

GLOW IN THE DARK CRICKET TOURNAMENT

It has been a pleasure to welcome Warwickshire Cricket Board into school today to facilitate the end of half-term inter-college event.

GLOW was launched in May 2017 by the Edgbaston Foundation to celebrate the arrival of the ICC men’s Champions Trophy and women’s Cricket World Cup Trophy tour in the region. Further events took place at schools in 2018 to present cricket  in a new way. You can read more about the programme and it's impact across the city by clicking here.

Students from Midland and Central College have been competing throughout the day to win the event - fast paced, split second reactions all under UV light... I think it is fair to say that the students have loved every minute of the event.

I look forward to sharing the updated college leader board when we return after half-term.

Thank you to Mr King and Mr Bradshaw for coordinating and to Warwickshire Cricket Board for facilitating this brilliant event.

Finally, as you are aware we break up for the February half-term holiday today. School re-opens on Monday 27th February and, as always, we expect all students to return on this date arriving no later than 8.30am.

I hope you have a good week and I look forward to updating you with more news we we return. Until then you can always contact me directly at: l.williams@lordswoodboys.co.uk
