bring me sunshine

Welcome to my weekly blog and I hope you and your families are well and have had a good week.

Last Friday, Mrs Thompson, Lead Professional for Humanities, arranged to take the Y10 History students to York for the day to visit the Jorvik Centre and complete a variety of activities around the historic city.

The group had a wonderful day; the sun shone, the traffic was kind and they managed to find the best fish and chips we've ever tasted (it is true- fish and chips 'up North' can't be beaten) The boys were an absolute delight and a real credit to the school with Jorvik staff and members of the pupils commenting on how well-mannered they were.

Asides learning more about the history of York, the visit gave them a new cultural experience, taking in the sights and sounds of a city that is very different from Birmingham. One student commented as we walked alongside the river that he felt like he was in a different country!

These experiences and different insights really do shape young minds and develop character beyond the 'classroom experience'. Thank you to Mrs Thompson for arranging the visit and providing such an enriching experience.

Assembly Programme

Our assembly programme over the last two weeks has focused on 'Save our Planet' and this week 'Fathers Day'.

One of our Y8 students created an inspirational and heartfelt poem about improving our environment, which was read out passionately and eloquently in our assemblies. You can read it below:

Edon

What have we done?

The world is falling down,

As we watch do you ask yourself what can I do to save my city or town?

You say that you will help, but then you forget the last second of that one breath.

You just follow the crowd. Be yourself.

Save the environment.Save the seas and all the trees. All fishes that are stuck in plastic bags and fish tanks.

Reducing pollution will help figure out the solution.

Pollution and waste are the main reasons why our environment is so bad.

Plastic bags and rubbish just thrown on the floor, it's mad.

This shouldn't be allowed. Every street dirty, LET'S STOP!

What does it mean to have a clean environment?

To me it means caring about your surroundings.

Put litter in the bin, just don't ruin it and dismount it.

All these flags shall come together and unite.

The United Nations shall stop this problem.

People say they are going to make changes, but they just sit back thinking that they are going to make changes.

But they won't...

You should see the smiles on the confident faces.

This isn't a song. This is a warning call to try and keep this long.

We paid too much attention to all the irrelevant news.

Me and the boys, the crew, saving the environment.

Take a second and think about what I have just said.

Together we can save bees for all the honey and we can save bread.

Oh I'm not talking about the money.

And I'm also not tryna be funny. Keeping it serious.

We need to save the environment.

Just think about what you can do.

These are the words for everyone, not just you!

Y7 students presented an assembly based on the reasons we celebrate Father's day and one student sang a beautiful Luther Vandross song 'Dance With My Father' to the school as a tribute to Fathers' Day this Sunday.

Y7 students have also participated in Edgbaston's Youth Council Meeting with George Dixon School, Lordswood Girls' School, Priory School and King Edwards School.

Students presented to the guest speaker our local MP, Preet Gill, their heartfelt views of the problems youths are facing today and how we can support each other, and in turn, improve our local neighbourhood.

Y8 students and Miss Sandhu took full advantage of the glorious sunshine this week enjoying reading 'Unarranged Marriage' by Bali Rai. What better way to enjoy the pleasures of reading!

Attendance Award

We are delighted to inform you that we have received another National School Attendance Award for the Spring Term 2022/23, which placed us as one of the top 10% of secondary schools in England for our attendance.

This is another great achievement and our thanks to all parents/carers for your commitment to ensuring that your son is in school everyday.

Sport fixtures and training schedules for week beginning 19 June 2023

Weekly sports round-up from Mr Janes, Director of Sport

Talented Athlete Programme

The TAP session challenged the students to recognise the importance of resilience and how failures contribute to development. The students looked at various Case Studies, reflecting on how difficult moments can support your journey. Students were then asked to reflect on their own difficulties they have faced and the emotions they experienced.

Year 9 ESA Football

The Year 9 ESA Football Team travelled to The Hayes on Wednesday as they faced Bishop Challoner in the Birmingham Schools' Cup Final. The boys competed hard on what was a scorching hot day. Challoner were the winners and we would like to congratulate them on their achievement. Man of the Match - Omar Ganesi - Fantastic range of passing and created numerous opportunities for the team.

Year 10 Cricket

Mr Preece took his Year 10 team to Coventry on Wednesday to face Bablake School for a Quarter Final fixture. The boys were outstanding as Bablake are an established school with regards to Cricket. LBS lost by 15 runs in the end after a spirited display. The students returned to school around 7:00 P.M. which shows their commitment to their Sport and to the school.
