Half-term approach

Welcome to my weekly blog and I hope you and your families are well and have had a good week.

As we approach the February half-term break, I want to share a few details and reminders with you to discuss with your son/s as appropriate. We break up for the half-term on Friday 17th February at 3pm. It is important that ALL students continue to attend everyday through the final week of this half-term.

Year 11

Year 9

Year 8

Year 7

Bearwood High Street

The image below shows an area of Bearwood High Street with two bus stops highlighted. The bus that stops here is the number 82 among others.

On Monday of this week I received some information that suggested students' from Lordswood Boys' School and other local secondary schools were gathering here to buy food from one of the many fast food outlets and they were being anti social in their behaviours and attitudes.

Since Monday, staff members have been reviewing the activity of students from Lordswood Boys' at this location, and although there are some students that are catching the bus from this location, no antisocial behaviour has been witnessed.

I would appreciate your support in speaking with your son regarding the importance of keeping safe on his way home from school and to be conscious of how loud, boisterous behaviour can be perceived by the general public.

In addition to the details above, the image to the right shows the Lordswood Road entrance to the school, which is a popular pick-up and drop-off location for parents/carers. Please DO NOT park on the white zigzag lines (in orange opposite), as this poses a health and safety risk to our students and compromises the crossing.

Thank you in advance for your support with this.

Sport fixtures and training schedules for week beginning 13th February 2023

Weekly sports round-up from Mr Janes, Director of Sport

Primary Indoor Athletics

Lordswood Boys' School were delighted to host an Indoor Athletics event on Wednesday for four of our local primary schools. Woodhouse, Welsh House Farm, St Peters and St Marys all attended the event with students participating in a range of events. We also hosted a primary football tournament on Thursday after school, over 50 primary students participated as they all enjoyed the games in the sun.

Mr Janes and Miss Lowndes-Ford are visiting Summerfield primary today to deliver PE and Music workshops to Year 5 students. We are extremely proud of our primary connections and providing the local community with secondary school experiences.

Lordswood Elite Sport Academy

The Year 7 ESA team continued their training schedule as they prepare for two fixtures the first week back after half-term. Mr Janes also ran a session for any other Year 7 student who enjoys the sport, it was great to see so many students enjoying their football. The Year 9 ESA squad also trained on Thursday night as they prepare for a league game against Kings Norton next week.

Cricket Success

Earlier this week, the Year 9’s beat UOB School by 6 wickets in a winner takes all fixture.

Nathan Nagra set the tone with a wicket in his first ball of the UOB innings, as the wickets continued to tumble. Nathan with 1 wicket, 2 catches and a run out. Manraaj Benning, of Year 7, cleaned up the tailend with 2 wickets from his over. As we restricted UOB to 13 all out after just 3.2 overs.

Shayaan & Manraaj made lightwork of the small total, chasing it down after 2.5 overs without losing a wicket.

We finished top of the league and await the announcement of finals day, which will be held at Edgbaston.

Climbing Wall Installation

As announced last week, the installation of our new climbing wall started on Thursday this week.

Students have been excited to see the wall being installed and I'm pleased to tell you that the wall is now fully installed and ready for use.

Six members of staff will be fully trained and certified as instructors next week and, in the first instance, the Y11 GCSE PE students will be the lucky group to take full advantage of this brilliant resource while they complete their practical assessments for the GCSE course.

The wall will be used as part of the PE curriculum and feature as part of our enrichment programme too.

Thank you to CLIMBINGWALL Solutions for their superb service throughout.

Music schedules for week beginning 13th February 2023

Weekly music round-up from Ms Lowndes-Ford, Director of Music

On Tuesday 7th February, 28 students attended a concert at the Symphony Hall and saw the famous City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra perform live. We had excellent seats at the very front  which enabled the students to see the orchestra really clearly.

The theme of the concert was called 'Our World' and it was based on the sounds of the environment and nature. The orchestra captured the sounds of the rainforest and even resorted to playing violins with pencils! It was a fantastic event enjoyed by all who attended.

Auditions for the Station Clock have taken place on Thursday and Friday this week. Thirty students will now attend a trip to Birmingham Conservatoire to record their voices which will form part of the Station Clock which will eventually be placed in a station in central Birmingham. The trip will take place next Friday 17th February. We are honoured to be a part of this wonderful piece of Art work which has recently won a Turner prize.

Congratulations to the successful students who attended the auditions. I was impressed with the creativity and their reasons for wishing to be a part of this.

Arrival of Melodicas

Please note that this week our brand new melodicas arrived. We will be starting a new melodica club after half term which is being led by one of our Head Music Ambassadors 'Jamie McDonald'. Further information about this will follow next week!
