The LHS Social Studies Department would like to encourage our high school students to read. As educators, we know that students who chose their own books to read, as opposed to assigned books, are five times more likely to read the entire book (Scholastic.com). Reading promotes vocabulary acquisition, creates critical thinkers, improves writing, provides background information for lessons, and prepares students for college and career. The books on this list were suggested by high school teachers because they enjoyed reading that title. We hope that one (or more) of the novels will inspire our students to read too.
