NARRATIVE REPORT
Our group of Field Study (FS) students was given two (2) English class sessions wherein we will completely handle the class of our Cooperating Teacher (CT), the Grade 7 Amber students. One will be done as a whole group while the other will be performed by pairs. The lessons I had to prepare for were all about Fantasy and Reality (group) and teaching the Past Perfect Tense (pair). Our group had to meticulously prepare for the mentioned class discussions. Part of the initial step was to prepare a Lesson Plan (LP) dedicated to the topic to be presented as a group and another for the lesson to be discussed as a pair, these documents were handed over to our CT for checking and feedback purposes. A week later, corrections were placed on our LPs and we dedicated a few days for revision and the second round of checking. When the LPs were finalized already, we prepared our Instructional Materials (IMs) and Assessment Sheets (quiz).
Before having our demonstration inside the actual classroom, our instructor dedicated his time for us to have a dry-run discussion at school so that he may observe and identify lapses in our delivery of the lesson and give additional input, corrections, and suggestions for improvement. Truly, that one-day session proved helpful as we learned a lot of tips from him which we may apply inside the classroom to enhance student motivation and effective classroom management. A day before our group demo, we decided to review our lesson and discuss the succession of the lesson delivery with one another. We also came up with a point distribution system inside the classroom, this includes giving stars to students who actively participate during the discussion, and after we have presented all our teaching demonstrations, we would give them prizes that are dependent on the number of stars they have accumulated. Our group has also decided to assign a seating arrangement for the students to lessen the noise they create during class and to give them an opportunity to socialize and be comfortable with their other classmates.
The day we handled the class we were very nervous; we were anxious about our effectiveness as future educators and we were negatively anticipating possible problems that may occur during the discussion. Throughout our session, our dear CT was present and helped handle the class in her own silent way. We had a lot of realizations after we finished the class, and these were pointed out as well by our CT during our feedback session after we finished the teaching demonstration. We had a lot to improve in terms of time management and classroom management, but overall, our CT gave her appreciation and compliments about our potential as good future educators.
In the pair demonstration that followed, my pair and I did our best to apply what we had learned from our mistakes during the group demo. We made sure that our IMs were visible to the students, we used code-switching and communicated with them in English and Waray so that they may better understand the lesson, and we tried our best to manage the class and the time wisely. Fortunately, we were able to finish on time, but still, there were lapses present.
Nonetheless, the two-time teaching demonstration was a wonderful experience for us future educators. We had a lot of realizations as a group, and individually as well. The mistakes we identified together with our CT, we always keep in mind, and when we do more teaching in the future, we will do our best to finally resolve these issues. The journey we have been on so far is truly something that always leaves a lesson for us as future educators, as students, and as individuals. The best thing we enjoy so much in this process is that we get to meet students from all walks of life, and interact with teachers who are both seasoned and new to the field, who never fail to give helpful advice and insights about the realities of teaching.
