“For the things we have to learn before we can do them, we learn by doing them.” ― Aristotle, The Nicomachean Ethics
Becoming a transformative educator is an exciting and challenging journey filled with discovery, growth, and invaluable experience. For Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEED) and Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED) students, the Field Study is a vital chapter in their academic adventure. It is a bridge between theory and the vibrant reality of the classroom, and it is more than just a requirement; it is a rite of passage, an initiation into the art and science of teaching. As aspiring educators step onto the stage of practical application, the field study becomes a canvas where theories are painted with the brushstrokes of real-life interactions, challenges, and the joy of making a difference in the lives of young learners.
This narrative is not only a mandatory milestone but also a cherished chapter in the book of their educational journey—a journey dedicated to shaping minds, igniting curiosity, and inspiring a future generation. An orientation for field study students, particularly practice teachers, is a crucial introduction to their upcoming educational journey. It is a structured process designed to familiarize students with the intricacies of their roles, responsibilities, and the educational environment they will be navigating. This initial phase provides a comprehensive overview, ensuring that practice teachers are well-equipped and prepared for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in their teaching experience.
On January 24, 2024, a general orientation for BEED and BSED students was held at the Student Center Mini Theater of Leyte Normal University in Tacloban City. Third-year BSED-English students organized the event under the supervision of BSED Field Study Coordinator, Mr. Niceforo Casaus. The whole-day event introduced FS students to the various faculty members of BEED and BSED who will serve as their respective Field Study Teachers (FST). The event aimed to inform the students about the process of becoming a Field Study Student (FSS), the subject requirements, tasks to accomplish, and most importantly, their responsibilities as Field Study Teacher Assistants once deployed to the school they are assigned to. The orientation was a critical step in ensuring that the students were well-prepared and equipped to take on the challenges of their upcoming field study experience and become successful educators.
