to read and write in basic Māori
to display understanding of tīkanga Māori
The study of Te Reo Māori enables students to appreciate more fully the cultural identity and language that is unique to Aotearoa/New Zealand.
The following topics may be covered:
Mihimihi (greetings)
Te whānau (Family)
Ngā Kōrero o Nehera (Myths and Legends)
Ko te marae (the marae)
Tikanga
This leads into Year 10 Māori and further study at NCEA including Māori Performing Arts. It gives a good base for basic language skills.
With a good understanding of te reo Māori and Tikanga you can enter any workforce you want. This can include tourism, hospitality, education, media, art and health.

Ko te pōwhiri (Māori welcomes)
This year 10 option provides excellent preparation for NCEA Level 1/Year 11 Te Reo Māori and to learn some skills that will be useful in later life.
With a good understanding of te reo Māori and Tikanga you can enter any workforce you want. This can include:
Tourism - travel agent, tour guide
Hospitality industry
Education - teacher (early childhood, primary school, secondary or tertiary), nanny, teacher aide, youth worker
Curator or Historian
Media - actor, radio presenter, director, editor
Artist - moko, carving, painting
Police officer
Health - midwife, nurse, doctor, therapist
