In this class you will gain knowledge and skills in order to produce a variety of food items. You will learn about measurement, cooking methods, kitchen safety, hygiene and nutrition. You will gain the ability to plan and prepare food items over two units. The first unit will focus on baking and you will design a baked food item of your choice. The second unit will look at cooking foods and give you the skills to prepare a home cooked meal for yourself or your whānau.
This course will give you a base knowledge of kitchen routines, systems and recipe reading. Year 9 Food Technology and Nutrition is designed as a foundation course for the year 10 course while providing the skills for later years. These skills will support your journey through your senior subject choices such as Hospitality, Food and nutrition, and Food technology.

During the first half of this two term course students will learn to prepare and cook ethnic dishes like Beef Tacos from Mexico, and Spicy Hoisin Pork Stir-fry from Asia.
The second term of this course consists of an introduction to Hospitality Unit Standards whereby students are able to gain Level One NCEA credits. Students will complete the theory and practical work for two unit standards; US 15919 Hot Finger Food and US 15921 cakes, sponges and scones. The course is a mix of practical cooking sessions and written work.
This course will set you up well for Level 1 Hospitality (Unit Standards), and Level 1 Home Economics/Food and Nutrition (Achievement Standards).
