We aim to teach students:

to read and write in Gagana Sāmoa
to display understanding of Sāmoa culture
The study of Gagana Sāmoa enables students to appreciate more fully the Sāmoa culture and language as one of the biggest pacific ethnicities here and being the third most spoken language in Aotearoa.
The following topics may be covered:
Folasaga (greetings)
Aiga (Family)
Tala mai anamua (Myths and Legends)
Tala Fa’asolopito o Samoa (Samoan History)
This leads into Year 10 Gagana Sāmoa and further study at NCEA. It gives a good base for basic language skills.
With a good understanding of Gagana Sāmoa you can enter any workforce you want. This can include:
Tourism - travel agent, tour guide
Hospitality industry
Education - teacher (early childhood, primary school, secondary or tertiary), nanny, teacher aide, youth worker
Media
Art

to read and write accurately in basic Gagana Sāmoa
to display understanding of Sāmoa values
The study of Gagana Sāmoa also reflects and teaches cultural Sāmoa values that enable Sāmoa students to appreciate more fully their own cultural identity and language to help build their confidence.

Gagana fa’aaloalo (Respectful language)
Meaai (food)
O lo’u fa’asinomaga (My identity)
Fale Sāmoa (Sāmoa house/structure)
Valaau mo matua/meaai (Cultural calls/announcements)
This year 10 option provides excellent preparation for NCEA Level 1/Year 11 Gagana Sāmoa and to learn some skills that will be useful in later life.
With a good understanding of Gagana Sāmoa, you can enter any workforce you want. This can include:
