AP CS Principles

INFORMATION

AP Computer Science Principles

The Computer Science Principles course and exam is offered and is usually explored by students in their grade 11 year.  Interested students must create a portfolio of their work, involving various aspects of computer science, and then challenge and exam in May.  Students who decide to challenge this exam must do some work outside of class to put together their portfolio and prepare for the exam, though the work they do in class will most certainly help them in their preparations!

Check out the website of the College Board for more.

Why AP?

There are two main reasons to challenge the AP exams.  Firstly, the material will prepare students for post-secondary studies (if they can handle AP, they're ready for university/college!).  Secondly, many Ontario universities will grant equivalency credits for students who do well on the AP exams.  Here is a list of Ontario universities and how they treat AP exams in terms of equivalencies.

Of course, by doing the AP exams, students take on that added challenge and ultimately prove to themselves that they can do it!  This confidence serves them well during and after high school.

The AP exams are standardized exams and there is a cost to taking them, and the date of the exam is strictly controlled by The College Board.  For more information, see Mr. Swaine or Ms. Sharpe, and also check out The College Board website.
