The AP CS A exam is primarily focused on Java programming, which is what is taught in grade 12U computer science (ICS4U). Students who take ICS4U will learn all they need to know in order to challenge the AP exam, should they choose to do so. Students usually take this exam in grade 12, but exceptions can be made.

There are two main reasons to challenge the AP exams. Firstly, the material will prepare students for post-secondary studies (if they can handle AP, they're ready for university/college!). Secondly, many Ontario universities will grant equivalency credits for students who do well on the AP exams. Here is a list of Ontario universities and how they treat AP exams in terms of equivalencies.
Of course, by doing the AP exams, students take on that added challenge and ultimately prove to themselves that they can do it! This confidence serves them well during and after high school.
The AP exams are standardized exams and there is a cost to taking them, and the date of the exam is strictly controlled by The College Board. For more information, see Mr. Swaine or Ms. Sharpe, and also check out The College Board website.
