We worked on this project in a challenging way. It was the first time that we were engaged as students to investigate the past of distant stories, which remain today fragmented in the memory of written and oral memories. There are those who managed to find living witnesses, keepers of the most intimate knowledge of these stories: relatives, friends, acquaintances. On the other hand, there are those who have used newspapers, letters and articles online as their main source. There is one thing in common that everyone has done: to go and find the stumbling block where the data of the deported person whose story we edited was written. From that point of view we tried to extend the ramifications of these people’s lives with the information we found. Some of us have worked in pairs, others independently but despite this we all helped by comparing the information available and the chances of finding others. Once we collected and assimilated the stories, we corrected the details with our Italian teacher and in class we worked together with our language teachers on how to translate them into the various languages studied: English, French and German.
In a second phase, the two high schools, the language high school and the art high school, joined forces in a group of several selected students and created the website together. One group took care of the graphic layout, while another group inserted and checked the content. A student created the virtual city map and initiated all programming processes.
The project was completed in June 2024 after two years and was then put online on the occasion of the remembrance day in January 2025.
The project was enriching for both students and teachers, and we thank everyone for their contribution.
