Announcements

12th grade only Parent/Guardians please join us!

Come join us for a circle conversation on Tuesday, May 14th at 9 a.m in the Library Media Center at LHS: "Letting Go While Holding On - Supporting your student (and yourself) through the complex transition to college." Whether you're launching your first child off to college or your last, we welcome all parents and caregivers of seniors at any stage to join.

Dialogue will include other caregivers as well as members of our counseling staff who will facilitate a conversation around the process of letting go… while still holding on. Partner with us to explore topics around financial communication and literacy, having conversations with your young adults around sexual exploration and consent in the college setting, and re-negotiating your relationship with your partner when the kids’ rooms turn into the office. We will dig into the complexities around helping your young adults to launch while sharing tips and resources that can support your journey.

We look forward to seeing you on the 14th!

The Counseling Department

Senior Seminar & Senior Parent/Guardian Gathering

During the first session of Senior Seminar, the counselors will be walking students through the process of requesting transcripts and teacher recommendations while allowing ample time for these items to be submitted to colleges before the November 1 early application deadline.

If you do not see Senior Seminar on your schedule, please connect with your counselor.  They are likely aware and have a plan for how you will receive senior seminar content.

Senior Seminar Round 2 will resume on November 28th, more information to follow.

Please keep an eye out for our Senior Family Post-Secondary Video Presentation that will be released on October 4th at 6:00 p.m.  This presentation will include all the information we provide students regarding the post-secondary planning process.

The Counseling Department will also be holding a Senior Parent/Guardian Gathering on October 6th from 8:45 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. for parents, caregivers, and counselors to meet and discuss how to support each other and their students during this time of excitement, anticipation, and transition.  Please see the attached flyer.

April 4th, 2022

Dear Student,

On Tuesday, April 5, your Course Request Verification Sheet will be available in Aspen as a published report. This sheet is a confirmation of the course requests you entered in Aspen, as well as the placement recommendations your current teachers entered on your behalf. Any changes you made during your Academic Advising appointment with your school counselor or via email should be reflected as well. Please be aware that this listing is meant only to verify your course requests and recommendations, and does not necessarily guarantee that you will be scheduled/enrolled in these courses for next year.

Please review this document carefully, and if a course request is missing or incorrect, cross out the incorrect entry and add the four-digit course number and course name. While you may move down a level in an academic class, you may not request a level change up. Please return the revised sheet to your counselor by Tuesday, April 12. You may “return this sheet” by scanning and emailing it to your counselor, printing it up and leaving it in your counselor’s mailbox, OR sending an email to your counselor with clear instructions regarding your requested change. If no changes are required, you do not need to return the sheet or communicate to your counselor.

Some additional points of explanation:

● If you submitted a placement appeals form or are awaiting a placement determination based on an assessment, you will receive notification of the decision from the department head within the next month. If your appeal is granted, the requested change will be made and no further action is required on your part.

● If you are auditioning for an advanced performing arts group, you will receive notification of the decision from the department head within the next month. If you pass the audition, the change will be made and no further action is required on your part.

● Some courses have already been canceled due to low enrollment and staffing limitations, and the alternate you provided has been added in its place. If you did not provide an alternate choice and you find yourself under-enrolled, please add an elective and submit this sheet to your counselor.

● A full schedule for each grade level is as follows: 28 credits for grade 9; 27 credits for grades 10 and 11; and 26 credits for grade 12.

● Special education services for students on IEP’s may be adjusted as review meetings are held in the spring. Such changes are submitted by liaisons to the Supervisor of Special Education at LHS, who will convey them to your counselor for processing.

Please address any changes by April 12, as the opportunities for change in the fall  can be limited by course availability. There will be an opportunity to request course changes, but such changes cannot be guaranteed.

Rising 12th Graders: You will receive notification that your schedule is available for viewing/printing in Aspen in June.

Rising 9th-11th Graders: You will receive notification that your schedule is available for viewing/printing in Aspen in August.

Dear Class of 2026,

Welcome to LHS! This year our welcome video for incoming 9th grade students and their families comes to you with a different “feel”. This 45-minute video introduces 8th graders to the students and teachers at LHS including segments of advice for freshmen from peers and teachers, all about the lunch options and classes you can take, and there’s a lot of dancing, laughter, and screaming goats involved. The movie ends with a segment of “fun moments at LHS” which is a compilation of many photos and videos of the joy in learning that happens here. On behalf of everyone involved, we are SO excited for you to enjoy.

Between now and the spring be on the lookout for more NEWS2USE clips.

Dear Class of 2026 Parents, Guardians, and Caregivers,

We are all looking forward to welcoming your student to Lexington High School next year! While it is a big transition, please know that we will support everyone along the way.

Over the next month, we will be sharing more information with you and your student regarding the process of building their schedule. We begin with the Class of 2026 and Parent/Guardian/Caregiver Information Night. This event will be virtual and pre-recorded due to the pandemic, but will include the same information that we have presented live and in person in the past. Our presentation will include information on the course recommendation and course request process, factors to consider when requesting courses and contemplating academic levels, the scheduling process timeline, the LHS 6-day cycle/block rotation, ways to support your student throughout the transition, and general questions about life as a high school student. Our featured speakers will include myself with welcoming remarks;  a School Counselor, Carrie Hamblin; a School Social Worker, Martha Queenin; and a student panel. We will launch the presentation on February 15th at 6:00pm and it will be available on our website linked here . At the end of the presentation, there will be a Google Form link so that you and your student can ask questions. We will do our best to answer all email questions within the week.

Additionally, Lexington High School Counselors will also visit with the 8th grade students during the school day to review the course selection process and provide a general overview of life at Lexington High School on the following dates: Clarke Middle School -February 16, 2022 and Diamond Middle School- February 17, 2022.

We look forward to collaborating with you all as your student matriculates to LHS!  If you have any questions during this process,  please reach out to your student’s 8th grade teachers and counselor.

Best,
