In grades 3–5, students use technology more often as they build digital skills and become more independent. Technology should have a clear learning purpose and add value to instruction. Teachers remain at the heart of learning, with hands-on activities, discussion and collaboration continuing to play an important role.
Purposeful and focused — Technology supports teacher-led instruction. Activities are short and focused (10–30 minutes) with teacher guidance.
Creative — Students use digital tools to create, explore ideas and solve problems. Technology should enhance, not replace, direct instruction and hands-on experiences.
Responsible independence — Students learn keyboarding, research, collaboration and how to use technology safely and respectfully.
Screen time without purpose — Technology is not used without a purpose or teacher guidance.
Repetitive practice — Games or drill-based apps should not be used unless they meet a specific learning need.
Independence without guidance — Students should not be expected to manage devices or digital tasks without age-appropriate support and supervision.
One important exception: Some students may use accessibility or assistive technology more often when they need these tools to fully take part in learning.

Students in grades 3-5 build AI awareness by identifying its role in daily tools and engaging in structured prompt writing with vetted, image-based generative tools (e.g., Adobe Express). Instruction focuses on creativity, critical thinking, and ethical use. Generative text tools (e.g., Gemini) are not introduced until middle school.
I can use AI to create illustrations and diagrams that show what I’m learning.
I can use an AI tool to get feedback to improve my work.
I can notice when AI gives answers that don't make sense or may not be true.
