Apple’s Safari Reader on iPad is a built-in browser tool that instantly strips away ads, sidebars, pop-ups, and auto-playing videos from web pages, transforming online articles into a clean, book-like document.
Students can use it while studying because it eliminates digital distractions during deep research, allows customizable font sizes and background colors (like switching to dark mode), generates quick article summaries and tables of contents for skimming. Safari Reader can read text aloud so students can listen to the sources while taking handwritten notes or walking to class.

Open Safari and navigate to the webpage you would like to read.

The Safari Reader icon is located on the left of the url address.
Note: Safari Reader supports individual web pages that contain clear, readable article text with primary content. Safari automatically detects these text-heavy pages, blog posts, and news stories, allowing the Reader icon to appear in the address bar. It does not support homepages, photo galleries, or index pages.

Select the Show Reader to start Safari Reader mode.

To exit Safari Reader, select the blue icon to the left of the URL address and select Hide Reader.

To customize the reading experience with Safari Reader, select the blue icon to the left of the URL address.
To adjust the text size use the small and large A.
To change the font style, use the drop-down menu in Reader.
To change the background and text color, select a different color theme circle.
Select Listen to Page to have the entire page read aloud.
