Apple Dictation converts spoken words into typed text on iPads. By tapping the microphone icon and speaking naturally, students can write without a keyboard. This lets learners focus on critical thinking and expressing their ideas without being slowed down by typing speed or spelling difficulties.
Go to System Settings.
In the left-hand menu, choose General.
Then, select Keyboard.
Scroll and locate Enable Dictation. Toggle on to enable Dictation.
*Note: Students only need to follow these directions once, and Dictation will be enabled.
Open an assignment or app.
To start dictation:
On-screen keyboard: Open the on-screen keyboard. Locate the microphone button on the left of the spacebar.
Attached keyboard: Select the microphone icon on your external keyboard OR, if your keyboard does not have a microphone icon, press 🌐 + D
Select the microphone button to begin recording. Wait 2-5 seconds and begin speaking.
Select the microphone button to stop dictation.
