Mrs Harper
Inclusion Manager
Hello, my name is Kim Harper and I am the Inclusion Lead for Shawley Community Primary School. My role is to support all pupils in their primary journey at Shawley but in particular our children who might have any additional needs. We are a very inclusive school and strive to make every pupil feel welcome and supported by things such as tailoring the curriculum, using additional resources and providing contact with external agencies if needed.
I am available to have discussions with any parents who feel that their child may need additional support from the school when their child starts at Shawley or if there is information from other professionals that you would like to share with the school. Please use the following email: kharper@shawley.surrey.sch.uk to contact me and we can arrange to meet via video conferencing or telephone call.
I look forward to meeting you all and beginning your child's primary education.
Regards, Mrs Harper
Support for children with Special Educational Needs
At Shawley, we use the Graduated Response for our SEND pupils, that is described in the SEND Code of Practice 2015
Graduated Approach
Step 1 Assess
We assess our pupils all the time and formally assess progress half termly. We identify pupils who may not be making expected progress. Further in-house assessments may be planned, and pupils may be referred to external agencies for specialist assessments.
Step 2 Plan
Support for pupils is planned carefully, and based on their identified needs. We use all the expertise in school and external agencies where necessary, to plan to meet your child’s needs. We monitor that planning on a regular basis for a positive impact on your child’s learning.
Step 3 Do
We use all our resources to make sure the plan can work and that your child receives the support they need.
Step 4 Review
Pupil progress is reviewed formally every half term and support altered as required. Parents will be involved in a formal review at least termly, for all pupils receiving wave 3 support.
Support in class
Quality First Teaching
Teachers adapt the learning and environment for all pupils to enable them to access the learning. We work hard to ensure that the school and classrooms are set up to meet a wide range of differing pupil needs, to ensure inclusion for all.
Visual cues in class
Sometimes everyone finds change and ‘not knowing’ difficult. This can often be worse if you are someone with a special educational need or disability. Much the same as parents often have a timetable on their fridge or by the front door to remind children what day homework is in, or what days they are at their mum’s or dad’s house, we have timetables in class. Every class has a clear visual picture and writing to tell the children what happens next. Some children have their own timetables.
Key Vocabulary and Displays
Key vocabulary and clear signs are on display in class. These help children to remember the learning that has already taken place and signpost how they may learn to support themselves.
We understand that doing everything for a child does not always help them, and we encourage all children to use the Working Wall (above) and resources (below).
Every class has clearly labelled resources using pictures and words so that children can learn to get the equipment and support that they need when they want it.
Wave 1
Teachers and senior leaders identify pupils who require additional support through daily informal and half termly assessment procedures. They use this information to plan for additional support for the pupils in class. Support may include adaptations to the learning environment, different learning activities and additional adult support.
Wave 2
Senior leaders work with teachers to identify those who are not making progress, despite receiving additional support in class. For these pupils, we plan interventions to help them to catch up with the rest of the class, for example, extra phonics sessions. These may be planned by the class teacher or senior leaders, and are monitored by Mrs Harper.
Wave 3
Some children have more complex difficulties that require an individual plan. Mrs Harper works with parents and teachers to plan individual programmes of support.
At Shawley we:
Recognise that different children have different needs and interests and that these may change over time.
Adapt what we do to meet the learning, physical, social and emotional needs of all children.
Adapt the environment to meet the learning, physical and emotional needs of all children.
Celebrate difference and encourage positive interactions amongst all members of our school community.
Who to talk to?
Your child’s class teacher is the first person to talk to if you have any concerns as they know your child best.
They can tell you how your child learns, and any support that they are giving your child in class.
If you are still concerned or feel that your concerns haven't been heard, then please talk to Mrs Harper (Assistant Headteacher) All appointments can be made through the office.
Is your child eligible for Free school meals?
