Year 3 has had an amazing two weeks. They have finished their newspaper articles about the "journey to the Centre of the Earth. they wrote all about how the three adventurers were in a makeshift raft, on an ocean under the core and how dinosaurs attacked them. They have finished all their assessments and all the children did very well. All of the year 3 staff are very proud of them. In the geography lessons, they have managed to apply some of the learning from the Natural History Museum about volcanoes and earthquakes. Not surprisingly, the positive impact that this has had on their learning has been amazing. The children have learnt about the structure of the Earth, the formation of mountains and volcanoes, what it would be like to live next to a volcano, and the destructive power of an earthquake. They have also discovered how humans have learnt to deal with living in these turbulent areas and how resilient human invention can be. In maths, the children have been learning how to multiply using the column method and how to use the bus stop method to divide. They have also had to deal with some very tricky two-step calculations. They were finding these a little tricky to begin with but after realising that if they use a bar model they can break the problem into manageable steps.
The year 3 team would like to take this opportunity to say Happy Christmas and Happy New Year to all the children and their families.
In the next term, we will be learning:
Maths - the children will be looking at length in metres and centimetres.
Writing - Our text will be "Pharaoh in the Bath)does" and we will be writing a character description
