This week we have been learning:
Maths - how to use column subtraction to take away two 2-digit numbers exchanging (crossing over the 10's). The children have worked really hard at this and have done very well. If you have a chance to practice this at home, it would help consolidate the children's learning and help them transfer this knowledge from their short term memory to their long term memory. Please also make sure you are completing your Numbots home learning each week. This will help the children so much with their mental maths! We would like children in year 2 to be completing 30 minutes of Numbots each week. This could be in one go or spread across several days. The children's usernames and passwords are stuck in the front cover of their reading diary.
Writing - we are learning about subordinating conjunctions and expanded noun phrases in the context of our story, "The Day the Crayons Quit".
History - we have written as historians to answer the question, "Would you have preferred to go to school in the past?". During this exercise, the children have had to look at similarities and differences, sources and evidence from different stages in the last 100 years.
Science - we have looked at food chains in different habitats and thought about why they are important.
Over the next couple of weeks, we will be learning:
Maths - we will be recapping column addition and subtraction before moving onto multiplication. The expectation is that year 2 children should know their 2s, 5s and 10 times tables by the end of the school year. We will introduce the children to Times Table Rock Stars soon and this will become part of their home learning regime.
Writing - we will be planning, writing and then editing a story based on the book, The Day the Crayons Quit.
Science - we will be writing as scienctists to answer the question, "Explain what a habitat is and how it helps animals to survive." The be successful the children will have to use sentence stems like: "I think this because…", "My explanation is…." and "This shows us that…" and explain the features of the different habitats they have looked at so far this term.
