Year 4 have had a productive fortnight. In English, we have explored the story of Percy Blackbarrow, who was a stowaway on board the Endurance on its journey to Antarctica and became a member of the crew after he was discovered. We created freeze frames and thought trackers to act out Percy's story and think about how he would feel. We then used these to help plan and write our diary entry which contained coordinating conjunctions, fronted adverbials and expanded noun phrases.
In Maths, we have practised dividing by 6,7,9,11 and 12 and using these skills to answer word problems. We are now moving onto multiplying two and three digit numbers by a one digit number.
In Science, we have explored the effect of temperature on change from a solid to a liquid using chocolate. We made a tinfoil boat for the piece of chocolate then placed them in either a hot water bath, warm water bath or a cold water bath and monitored how they changed over time. We made sure our test was fair by using the same size piece of chocolate each time and by testing then after the same amount of time had elapsed. We discovered that the hotter the water the quicker the change from solid to liquid by melting. We have also explored condensation and evaporation in water.
As part of our study of the water cycle, we had a visit from Nick from SES Water for a workshop to show what is in reservoir water, how it is cleaned ready for us to consume and how we save water. We showed a good understanding of the water cycle using words such as condensation, evaporation and precipitation. We received 4 minute timers to help us keep track of the time we spend in the shower and help us save water.
We have been exploring the physical features of Antarctica in Humanities and identifying ice shelves on a map. We have also explored mountains, volcanoes, winds , climate and lakes in the area.
We really enjoyed our first couple of weeks of Forest Schools. Please remember to make sure your child is dressed appropriately for Forest School and has indoor and outdoor shoes/boots for that day. Thank you.
