Over the last fortnight, we have continued to learn and grow in Year 4. The children are learning more and more in their topics and showing a great interest in finding out more information.
In Maths over the last fortnight, your child has been learning about rounding. Rounding is a way of estimating a number to the nearest multiple of 10, 100, 1000, and so on. It is a valuable skill to learn because it can be used in many different areas of life, from shopping and cooking to budgeting and investing. We used various methods to figure out which number reminds us to round up and which number makes us round down. As well as this we have started to revisit addition using various methods such as the bar method and the column method.
As part of our English lessons, the children have written a letter to the local MP, Mr. Scully, informing him of their suggestions on how to save the town of Sutton if a volcano was to erupt close by.In their letter, the children suggest that the local government build a series of underground evacuation tunnels that would connect all of the homes and businesses in Sutton. This would allow people to evacuate the town quickly and safely in the event of an eruption. The children also suggest that the local government create a system of early warning sirens and public service announcements that would alert people to the danger of an eruption. This would give people enough time to evacuate the town before the eruption occurred. They used persusasive language techniques, fronted adverbials and expanded noun phrases thoughout their letters.
During our Art lessons, the children created a scene for a story using one sentence with the small world toys they brought into school from home. The children used a variety of small world toys to create the scene, including a knight, a dragon, trees, and a castle. They also used their imaginations to add details to the scene, such as sound effects and dialogue.I was very impressed with the children's creativity and imagination. They were able to use their small world toys to create a vivid and exciting scene that told a snippet of a story.
As part of our History and Georgraphy topic, the children learnt about Boudicca who was a Celtic queen who led a rebellion against the Romans in 60 AD. She was angered by the Romans' harsh treatment of her people, and she gathered a large army to fight them. Boudicca's army was initially successful, destroying several Roman towns. However, the Romans eventually defeated Boudicca's forces, and she took her own life. As well as this the children have been using VR to look at Hadrians' wall and research why it was built, where it was built and how it would have looked. They also learnt that Hadrian's Wall was a defensive wall built by the Romans in the 2nd century AD. It was built to keep out the Picts and Scots, who were tribes from northern Britain. Hadrian's Wall is one of the most famous Roman ruins in Britain, and it is a popular tourist destination.
As part of our Religious education, the children have learned about the harvest and Sukkot festivals. Harvest is a time to celebrate the abundance of food that the earth has provided. It is also a time to reflect on how fortunate we are to have enough to eat. Sukkot is a Jewish festival that commemorates the Israelites' wandering in the desert for 40 years after the Exodus from Egypt.
Throughout our Science lessons, the children have learned about electricity safety and circuits.Electricity is the flow of electrons through a material. Circuits are a closed path that electricity can flow through. Circuits contain a power source, wires, and a load. The power source provides the energy to push the electrons through the circuit. The wires allow the electrons to flow from the power source to the load and back. The load is the device that uses the electricity.Your children have learned about electricity and circuits through a variety of activities, including reading, class discussions, and hands-on experiments. They have also learned about the different types of circuits and how to build their own circuits.
We look forward to going to Bookfest on the 10th of October and will share our photos with you on the next newsletter.

The Year 4 team.
The children created their own circuits and discussed why some circuits caused the Buzzer to Buzz as well as discussing why the light bulb did not light.
In PE the children were creating an array of balance poses and trying to move the cones by only stretching ones body.
