Greetings from Year 2.
The children have continued to work very hard and are enjoying their new curriculum. They have continued with the reading squad and are reading three times a week in class as well as completing reading comprehension tasks in class.
In Writing, they have been exploring the book, 'The day the crayons quit, ' and have used the story to write a riddle which features one of the crayons from the book and they have also written a letter to one of the crayons as Duncan apologising for what he has done and explaining how he will change in the future. They have used role play to take on the roles of the crayons and Duncan, have planned their ideas and tried to add noun phrases to their riddles.
In Maths, the children have been exploring using tens and ones, partitioning and starting to use the column method to add and subtract 2 digit numbers. They have also practise renaming. In addition, this is when there are more than 9 ones in the ones column so we have to make some of the ones into a new ten stick and put it with the tens. Next week, we will practice renaming in subtraction. This is when there are not enough ones in the ones column so we have to take one of the ten sticks and turn them into ones before we can do the subtraction.
In Science, they have continued to explore our topic, Materials. They have explored what happens to solids (butter, chocolate, ice, bread, jelly) when heated. They then discovered if this was a reversible reaction by seeing what happened when we cooled the foods again. Then, the children explored what happens to various types of paper or card if we stretch, twist or turn them.
In Geography, the children have been creating a poster describing some of the features of Asia and making a travel leaflet about Europe.
In Art, the children have begun to create their final piece of art work for this topic. They have used their line drawing skills to draw the outline and fine features of their leaf using wax crayons. They are going to use paint to create a wax resist masterpiece next week.
We will be expecting the children to complete the following homework each week:
Home reading- to be recorded in their reading diaries. The children should be reading at home at least 3 times a week. Please make sure your child has their reading diary in school every day.
Spelling sheets given out on Friday. Please return by the following Friday.
Numbots - Children to complete at least 15 minutes on the Numbot programme. We have shown the children where to access Numbots and their log in details have been stuck into their reading diaries.
