At Leigh on Mendip School, we aim to deliver a high-quality science education that builds knowledge, develops curiosity and fosters a lifelong love of learning. Through hands-on, practical experiences, we encourage children to explore, question and understand the world around them.
Curriculum Intent
Science is taught as a discrete subject, with links made across the curriculum. Our teaching follows the National Curriculum and the Somerset Agreed Syllabus: Awareness, Mystery & Value. We aim to:
Promote inquisitive thinking through biology, chemistry, and physics
Encourage rational explanation and curiosity about natural phenomena
Help children understand how science is used to predict, explain and analyse
Our curriculum is structured around threshold concepts – key ideas that give coherence and depth to learning.

Progression & Milestones
By the end of Key Stage 1, children will be able to:
Ask questions and carry out simple investigations
Observe and use basic equipment
Record and discuss findings
By the end of Key Stage 2, children will:
Plan and carry out fair tests
Record and analyse data using graphs and scientific diagrams
Use findings to make predictions and draw conclusions
Understand how evidence supports or refutes ideas
We enhance science learning with real-world experiences:
On-site pond and nearby forest school
Visits to the local quarry to explore habitats and rocks
Science clubs, trips, and participation in British Science Week
Engaging with visitors, museums, and other enriching opportunities
These experiences help children see science as relevant and exciting, deepening their understanding and enjoyment.
