At Leigh on Mendip, Design and Technology (DT) is taught as a discrete subject, with meaningful links to other areas of the curriculum where appropriate. Through DT, children develop practical skills, problem-solving abilities, and creative thinking, as they explore how things are designed, made, and improved.
We use Kapow Primary to deliver our DT curriculum, ensuring that skills and knowledge are built progressively as children move through the school, preparing them for real-world applications and future learning.
Our DT curriculum covers the following key areas:
Cooking and Nutrition – Learning about healthy eating and preparing food safely
Mechanical Systems – Exploring levers, pulleys, gears, and other mechanisms
Textiles – Designing and creating using fabric and stitching techniques
Electrical Systems – Building simple circuits and understanding how they work
Structures – Constructing and strengthening frames and models
Digital World – Integrating digital components into designs and exploring how technology enhances functionality
