At Leigh on Mendip School, we are committed to providing all our children with a broad and balanced PE curriculum. We focus on developing fundamental skills such as agility, balance and coordination and we are able to build on these through a wide range of engaging and enjoyable sports. Our aim is to foster not only physical ability but also an understanding of tactics, teamwork and self-improvement.
Children have two PE lessons each week, one delivered by their class teacher and the other with a specialist sports coach. A variety of sports are taught across the year groups, with lessons carefully sequenced to ensure skills are developed and built upon progressively as children move through the school.
We also offer weekly swimming lessons for pupils, beginning in Year 2. These lessons are tailored to meet each child’s needs and focus on water safety and fundamental swimming skills. They are delivered by fully qualified instructors at our local community pool in Midsomer Norton.
In addition to our PE provision, we also offer opportunities for all children to take part in a range of exciting competitions and events. We value both competitiveness and inclusivity, ensuring every child is encouraged to get involved. We believe that promoting participation helps build confidence, resilience and self-belief - qualities that extend beyond the PE lesson and support children's wider development.
